Do you walk 10,000 steps?

And if you do what have been the results? Did you shed pounds? Did you have to watch your diet to see results or could you have pizza and 2 McDonald's meal, walk 10,000 and still see results?

caprimint 20-02-2025 05:56 AM

20k-30k a day

AnnieK 20-02-2025 06:07 AM

To lose weight just walking you have to put yourself in a calorie deficit. So you have to burn more calories than you consume. Walking 10000 steps burns around 500 calories ish. You burn around 1500 calories just by living so if you stick to around 1500 calories from food you would lose weight from just walking.....very slowly but you would.

Tldr: no you can't eat pizza dn McDonald's and lose weight just by making sure you get 10000 steps in

Benjamin 20-02-2025 06:10 AM

I don’t walk always hit 10k everyday but I I do at least 70k in a week (I go hiking most weekends).

Ammi 20-02-2025 06:26 AM

…I do more than, I would guess…but I stopped counting steps quite a while ago, it becomes obsessive……Mr Ammi still has his app going to count them though and on extra long walks he’ll sometimes say how many steps we’ve done…

Niamh. 20-02-2025 06:45 AM

Not everyday no. And no doing 10k steps isn't going to make you lose weight so you can eat whatever. Your diet really is the biggest factor in helping you lose weight

Cherie 20-02-2025 06:49 AM

Yes because of Miss Tilly, but yes calorie deficit and exercise is the only way to lose weight as Annie says

Crimson Dynamo 20-02-2025 07:10 AM

No

UserSince2005 20-02-2025 07:52 AM

I would walk 500 miles

MTVN 20-02-2025 12:35 PM

Not every day but I probably average over 10,000 across the week

While getting your steps in helps walking is like the least efficient form of exercise for burning calories. I think people are better off taking up running or cycling than just focusing on their walking

Vanessa 20-02-2025 01:10 PM

I like walking. It helps to clear my mind.

I prefer a hike to a run, I tried running for a bit but I absolutely hated it, not great for the joints either

Yes I don't like running either. Never done a hike.

GoldHeart 20-02-2025 01:19 PM

I keep saying I should walk more, when it gets warmer... I'll try and make the most of it.

I think you'd love it if you already like walking and think it clears your mind. It's a good way to explore as well, finding new spots to visit once a week or so

…pavement/hard surface running isn’t great for the knees/legs at all …walking at speed is ok and gets to burning celeries…Nordic Walking is meant to be excellent but it’s not something that’s really appealed to me, personally…I might look at it at some point though…

Hiking is better than walking. ;)

I probably would enjoy it and you can take breaks along the way. Sounds good to me

Honestly, I love it. If you’re going to start, start with a gentle hike and ease yourself into the more difficult/longer ones. Make sure to pack all the things you’ll need too; enough water, food, mini first aid kit, lightweight water proofs etc.

Not currently. But I was briefly unemployed in the early part of last year and was doing at least 20k steps a day and averaging around 25k. That's around 4 hours a day. Some of the most peaceful and enjoyable time I've ever spent on this Earth. I kind of want to get back into the habit, but coupled with the work I now have later in the day, so much as even thinking about a walk leaves me feeling exhausted.

…I’m glad that you got and felt something really positive and enhancing from what would have been a time of darker tones as well with your job situation…that’s really heart warming to hear……I can understand how your working hours don’t allow for much of a balance atm…maybe you could think about walking again in your non working days, though…and in holiday time…it wouldn’t become a routine but it might recapture some of that peacefulness and enjoyment that you felt…

Jessica. 20-02-2025 05:10 PM

I did 5k today

Thank you Ammi. Yeah I didn't want to mention it, but in retrospect I think the walks may have been an ever so slightly unhealthy way of coping with the loss I'd then recently suffered. 25k is just a tad excessive, looking back. Still, as far as coping mechanisms go, it's preferable to the drink and drugs.

Crimson Dynamo 20-02-2025 05:20 PM

We did 500 miles :smug:

…I’m not sure if it’s unhealthy, it’s just how we all cope with grief in different ways…I was similar when my dad died in that I became gym obsessed and would try to go three times a day and would begin to panic if I wasn’t able to go…releasing endorphins is also linked to to releasing emotions, isn’t it…?…and it’s also a time when we feel a huge loss of life control, which pushing our bodies physical can help to put back into place, you know…and you experienced a great sense of calm from your walking …you may not be able to explore that right now with work commitments but it’s something you’re still holding and might enjoy again at some point when it feels right and you’re able to…

Yeah can understand the appeal of a hike although it's difficult to do it very regularly

Also true about the joints, I've not had many problems before but I'm doing long distances now and I do feel it. I was being sold on the merits of trail running the other day and I might look into that after I've got my marathon out the way

Exactly. You get it completely. And I too often felt a sense of panic and unease whenever life intervened and I couldn't go for a walk. :joker: In a roundabout way I guess I was succumbing to peer pressure and going along with a few friends' opinion that it was perhaps just a teensy bit unhealthy to go out for as as long as I did and as often. And of course, this was January-February, so it was freezing cold. But as you describe, it felt precisely the opposite of unhealthy in the moment. And for many of the same reasons you stated.

….and that’s what friends do as well, isn’t it…they worry for us because it’s a solitary road that we go through and it’s their time for feeling helpless also, their concerns are just how they’re coping also……

Since the 15th December I doubt I have walked a dozen steps.
However I am losing weight:cheer2:
