Spain and Portugal experiencing major unexplained electricity blackout…

Huge swathes of Spain and Portugal have reportedly been hit with power outages that have seen airports and metro systems shut down, mobile phone signal fail, and electricity out.

There has been no explanation as yet for the power outages - which have affected Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Seville in Spain, as well as Lisbon in Portugal. Spanish media also reported the issue affecting areas in France.

Spain's powergrid company Red Electrica said it is working to solve the problem, but there has been no indication of what caused the widespread blackout.

In Valencia, the metro suspended its services, while parts of the underground in Madrid were evacuated following the blackout. The power cuts have apparently also seen traffic chaos across the country, with traffic lights no longer working.

in Spain they are reporting it gradually is being restored as we speak

they can't rule out a cyber attack, but they can't also confirm it being a cyber attack, so a thorough investigation will be required

one of my province's radio DJ's Maarten Kortlever is currently on holiday in Barcelona, he managed to keep us informed with a mobile cellphone with him over the phone with Omroep Brabant live on the radio

Cherie 28-04-2025 01:17 PM

and this is why you should always have a battery radio as old fashioned as it might sound, as the mobile signals was not working for many ...and some bottled water as there was no water coming from the taps

its defo a cyber attack, this could roll out across Europe

arista 28-04-2025 01:22 PM

"its defo a cyber attack,"

Yes, the reason
No one is saying why?

no fearmongering pls :nono:

spontaneous outages can occur, even without cyber attacks

here where i live, we not too long ago, last month

our power company Enexis says this can also happen more often due to our changing climate, more extremes in the weather in terms of warm weather or stormy weather

arista 28-04-2025 01:25 PM

Affected the Live Tennis
as No Cameras had power.

SkyNewsHD showed
Public in a Railway tunnel

That looked terrible

no?

since they are working hard to also fix this problem, while also investigating, they haven't got the time to inform us then

I do hope you update us
It is more close to your flat nation

Nicky91 28-04-2025 01:45 PM

could be because Spain, Portugal and southern France use each other's power

so if there is a problem, all these might be affected, like now

my nation Netherlands for example distributes and uses power also from Belgium and Germany

and it is commonly known Spain, Portugal, parts of France (mostly southern france) work together in terms of power, which is cheaper that way

It's an extremely hot day too, we just did the big food shop on Saturday, I'm worried about it all being wasted. Also don't know how I'll sort the baby's dinner.

Nicky91 28-04-2025 01:51 PM

problems in France have been restored to normal

and the french have offered Spain for assistance in restoring their power to normal as well

as long as you kept the fridge and freezer closed it should remain cool inside for quite some time though?

the more you open them, the more it can get warmer in there

Yes great post
from there.

I hate Power Cuts
Have radios ready for those times

Jessica. 28-04-2025 01:59 PM

People are rushing to supermarkets buying all the water and canned foods

People are fighting at gas pumps to fill their car before anyone else

I have put three ice packs in my fridge because I had to open it anyway.

Yes, I would be there
if I was in your nation

I feel sorry
for those in the underground railway tunnel

We already have 24 litres of bottled water but I don't think panicking is a good idea. My internet is getting spotty.

……it’s now being reported to be a 'Rare atmospheric phenomenon' that’s causing the outages…Portugal’s PM Luis Montenegro has said they will try to restore the situation in the next hours, and expect a resolution today…

I really hope so!

Aliens or AI.

Cherie 28-04-2025 03:31 PM

A rare atmospheric problem that affected 3 countries, I am not normally a conspiracy theorist but we were also told the LA Fire were due to climate change until they weren't .....sure as hell not going to tell us its a cyber attack, coming hot on the heels of the fire that put Heathrow out of action a few months back I have my doubts

and yes Jess unfortunately people will panic buy and do stupid stuff

bots 28-04-2025 03:39 PM

being without power in a hot country is a nightmare. On top of the usual stuff, you have no aircon or fans either, making life extremely uncomfortable. It's very unusual for an entire country to suffer a power failure, let alone 2 or 3 so i would definitely say it was a malicious attack

Nicky91 28-04-2025 04:10 PM

like i said, Portugal and Southern France are also on the same power grid as Spain

what is unusual though is that France has their power restored, although maybe they can also use power from the french based energy suppliers

i think i believe the atmospherical phenomenon more than a possible cyber attack, and good on Portugal's energy provider REN that they did their own investigation, considering this also concerns them very much

Nicky91 28-04-2025 04:13 PM

of course you are not a conspiracy theorist @Cherie

and i understand why this is very suspicious

due to "temperature variations in Spain"

Yes
Some were stranded on a train

No
Overground cables - Again

["Anomalous Oscillations" in extremely high-voltage lines.]

Oscillating Electric Friction

arista 28-04-2025 04:19 PM

This is why the UK should Learn to do
underground Electric Cables
safer

Nicky91 28-04-2025 04:22 PM

one good thing, the people will be compensated most likely, as it cannot take longer than 4 hours without power, longer than that you receive compensations, at least that is how it goes in my nation with similar crisisses like these

Cherie 28-04-2025 04:55 PM

Some towns in Ireland were without power for a week after Storm Eoghan dont think they got any compo

The Spanish PM says he does not know what has caused this?

Yes if they are going with the weather causing this, this give campaigners something to fight on

Yes in the UK loads are fighting
Even in Wales
all would prefer, underground, safer
Electricity Supply.

People clearly learnt nothing from Covid times.

Crimson Dynamo 28-04-2025 05:28 PM

REN said that as a result of extreme temperature variations in Spain, there were
"anomalous oscillations" in extremely high-voltage lines. REN said this is known as
"induced atmospheric variation," which in turn can lead to oscillations. This caused
synchronization failures between systems, leading to successive disturbances across the
European network, which is interconnected.

-----------

Temperature variation in Spain today 10 C from hottest to coolest

this sounds like BS

(and why you would always keep actual cash handy)

it is BS, there is no way they could conclude an investigation on a power failure that affected the whole country on the same day it happened. Particularly when they are spouting bollocks about temperature gradients. Go to the beach on the costas and compare against Barcelona or any mountainous region and there are always large temperature gradients. Spain is a massive country

From Ch4HDnews Live

Extreme Heat
It caused the Overhead Cables to Bounce
and because of that extreme danger
it shut down all power.

(California Fires had something like that)

This is why the UK is Crazy doing it Up High

But we don't have extreme heat here in the UK.
