are MOBO awards racist?
 

Just saw this debate on: the Wright Stuff on channel 5 this morning.

He was saying that why should there be an awards show giving out awards to black people only and that to many could seem racist. What if there was an awards show for only white people, I guess there would be an outrage?

It was a very interesting viewpoint.

But they don't just give awards to black people. This year you had Amy Winehouse and Tim Westwood win awards. So what's the problem.

Perhaps the odd white person does get called forth to win awards for MOBO and similar ceremonies...
But im sure we all know full well that it seems to be a black orientated award ceremony.

Some might argue that the genre/type of music just happens to be sang by mostly black people, and that it's no fault of their own that more black people just happen to like producing such music.

Then again, it is almost black people only. And if a white people only music award ceremony started, whether intentional or just down to white people only procuding such music, im sure more people would point it out and complain.

I highly doubt there's a huge lack of white people for the MOBO awards to be fair, as these days it seems many white people are into the same type of music, so im sure many produce it too.

In america a scholarship was setup for black people only.
So white people set up a scholarship in jest just to prove a point, that was for white people only...and SHOCK HORROR the black people complained it was racist =] when they were currently doing the exact same thing.

Just goes to show what control black people have over the world that they can demand things given to them, often just them, whilst also branding all white people who do the same as racists.

There is a MOWO awards show. It's called the Classical Brits. Not many black people win that but they can enter. Does that make it racist?

Matthew wright forgot to mention Amy Winehouse and Tim Westwood:puzzled: perhaps it was because it is known as awards just for black people and Amy and Tim are the rare exceptions. Perhaps it would be better to have award shows that don't mention the words black or white, just award shows.

I realy can't see the problem of it saying it is music of black origin if that is what it is.

Everyone feels differently. I would imagine that is why Matthew brought the subject up. He said that in fairness, there should be an awards show specifically for white people only. But he knew already how that would be seen. Not such a good idea?

It would be better to have an awards show which is not picking on one type only. That is what he said.

There would be outrage if there was an awards ceremony that made it clear they only give out awards to white people though. :rolleyes:

You can be any colour to win, because it all about where the music originated from not what colour you are

MOBOs mainly focus on R&B, soul, reggae and hip-hop, and other such styles of music - the "black origin" is not referring to the skin colour of the artists, it's referring to the skin colour of those who created these genres.

Exactly...... I find it offensive that anyone can either contemplate having such "white" awards

I don't agree with this, I'm just playing devils advocate here for a moment and suggesting that if there was an awards ceremony for music of white origin - would there be uproar?

I think if it was instated now, there would be. To be honest there isn't really a need for it - but I wouldn't object to it.

Unfortunately, tolerance seems to work only one way today, as we've seen in various debates over who can use the 'n' word.

Also - is there a musical genre that is specifically of "white origin"? I'm not sure if there is...

i dont mind the mobos one bit. its black music but awards could be given out to anyone. the reason mostly black people get it is because its black origin so i see no problem with it. i agree with it 100%.

btw i agree that if thre was a mowo there would be an outrage

I'd say Classical, even though you get black classical artists, the majority are white.
But I don't think there is a genre specifically of white origin otherwise.

Yes it is Racist imo if there was an awards for JUST white people there would be chaos IMO it IS out of order that people of black origin get there own awards what next there own TOWNS!!! There SHOULD be awards for white people origin IMO how would they feel then...the same way some people feel about the MOBOs they only have a few white people there so people cant say its racist...AND NO IM NOT RACIST i just find unfair that blacks now have there own awards

It is music of black ORIGIN. Meaning - that these music genres celebrated by the MOBOs (Reggae, R&B, Soul, Blues, Hip Hop, etc...) are of black origin.

Amy Winehouse and Tim Westwood won awards at the latest awards. And they're both white.

Steven. Music of Black origin. The clue in in the word "origin" meaning where the music came from. Not who it is done by. Who were the first people to do the blues, jazz, hip hop reggae and so on? It was back people. Thus music of "BLACK" origin.

I had this one thrown at me by I think it was Nodis to try an justifie his far right views. I think it was his as he has had so many different accounts. The up shot was that I posted the Home Office stats showing that according to the police/CPS around 50% of murder victims where police believed race to be the cause where white. That makes the above statement redundant as it is not based on fact.

Just remembered it was not nodis, but it was the sort of uninformed "fact" he would use.

Nearly half of all victims of racially motivated murders in the last decade have been white, according to official figures released by the Home Office.

The data, released under Freedom of Information legislation, shows that between 1995 and 2004 there have been 58 murders where the police consider a racial element played a key part. Out of these, 24 have been where the murder victim was white.

The disclosure will add to the intense debate over multiculturalism in British society. The figures also overturn the assumption that almost all racial murders are committed against ethnic minority victims.

Please take into account what Kiz and Dr are saying... it's not an awards just for black people - each time you post that it is, it makes the rest of your argument void.

It's for music from black origin - this could involve using patois in the lyrics, it could involve grime dancing... ANYTHING... all of these things could come from white people, but the origins of this (patois, grime dancing etc) is black - from the slave trade era.

White people can win the award, it just so happens that not many white people are in this genre. Thats not racist. The award is for everyone.

Also... ermm... stats on everyone moving to Spain and Australia? Or is this another cliched media-fuelled opinion?

The MOBO's celebrates a type of music, a genre, just like a genre of rock or pop or classical. Its where the music came from.

Because it has the word black you consider it racist???

So what would you consider to be the music of 'white' origin... please do explain in more detail????
