Earth tremor felt across England

People from across large parts of England have reported an earth tremor.
The BBC has received calls from people in Staffordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, Manchester, Berkshire and the West Midlands about a "quake".

The tremor could be felt in central Birmingham at about 0100 GMT but it is unclear if it has caused any damage.

The US Geographical Survey's website reported a quake of the magnitude of 4.7 and said the epicentre was 30 miles (50km) south of Kingston-upon-Hull.

The West Midlands was hit by an earthquake in 2002 in the Dudley area that reached 5.0 on the Richter scale and caused damage to homes.

Jemma Harrison, 22, in Bury, Greater Manchester, said: "It was really bad. I was fast asleep and woke up and the room was shaking and there was a loud bang and alarms were going off."

Natasha Cavey, in Tipton in the West Midlands, said: "All my cupboard doors flew open and the whole house shook, it was unreal. I can't believe it."

Scarlett. 27-02-2008 12:46 AM

Here is the ricketer scale
We got a 4.7

Less than 2.0 Micro Microearthquakes, not felt. About 8,000 per day

2.0-2.9 Minor Generally not felt, but recorded. About 1,000 per day

3.0-3.9 Minor Often felt, but rarely causes damage. 49,000 per year (est.)

4.0-4.9 Light Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises. Significant damage unlikely. 6,200 per year (est.)

5.0-5.9 Moderate Can cause major damage to poorly constructed buildings over small regions. At most slight damage to well-designed buildings. 800 per year

6.0-6.9 Strong Can be destructive in areas up to about 100 miles across in populated areas. 120 per year

7.0-7.9 Major Can cause serious damage over larger areas. 18 per year

8.0-8.9 Great Can cause serious damage in areas several hundred miles across. 1 per year

9.0-9.9 Great Devastating in areas several thousand miles across. 1 per 20 years

10.0+ Great Never recorded; see below for equivalent seismic energy yield. Extremely rare (Unknown)

INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE!

Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Indonesia was rocked again by an earthquake today, its 12th in the past four days, when a 5.8- magnitude temblor struck southwest Sumatra, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

The earthquake began at 1:18 a.m., 176 kilometers (109 miles) west from Bengkulu, Sumatra, and was 3 kilometers deep, the USGS said. No damages or injuries were immediately reported.

Dozens of homes were damaged and a health clinic was leveled yesterday in the wake of a 6.6 magnitude quake that prompted the U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Center and the Japan Meteorological Agency to warn about a ``very small possibility'' of a ``destructive local tsunami'' in the Indian Ocean.

Scarlett. 27-02-2008 01:07 AM

Its the apocolypse run!!!!

Lauren 27-02-2008 01:25 AM

Apparently we're expecting aftershocks! If afteshocks occur over 3 on the richter scale I have to be evacuated...!!

goroos1994 27-02-2008 01:35 AM

Omg, getting the news now from Australia. Hope you are all safe and ok!

Gemmer-x 27-02-2008 07:11 AM

CassetteFinger 27-02-2008 07:17 AM

BigSister 27-02-2008 09:03 AM

I didnt feel anything and i thought i would be woken up lol

XxShortyxX 27-02-2008 09:09 AM

I felt it all the way here in Northampton! Must of been a big one, we were a wake when when it happend, I thought it was someone trying to break into are house lol, apparently ones like that happen every 10-20 years here in the UK, so if you missed don't worry, in 10-20 years time it will happen again

Sunny_01 27-02-2008 09:16 AM

didnt feel a thing, must have missed us in the North East, either that or I am such a heavy sleeper that I slept straight through it.

BigSister 27-02-2008 09:35 AM

i remember waking up but i dont know why lol i mean it was felt in preston and chorley so maybe it was felt here i dunno but i am a deep sleeper so ill have to ask my mum and dad

Matt10k 27-02-2008 10:29 AM

Scared the crap out of me! I'd just gone to bed, my computer monitor went mad and even my bed shook. Felt like that scene out of the exorcist :conf2:

goroos1994 27-02-2008 10:33 AM

Haha, when the head spins round and round? I can imagine how traumatising it would be to have a natural disaster in the middle of the night.

Matt10k 27-02-2008 10:38 AM

lol, I meant the bit where her bed violently shakes! It scared me because it took me a few minutes to figure out it must have been a quake. Large ones are so unlikely in the uk I thought of all sorts of other things it could have been first. I was literally frozen in bed for the 1st minute or so!

Spike 27-02-2008 10:52 AM

Everyone I know felt the earthquake by me, I slept right through it though nothing can wake me up.

My mum felt her bed shake SLIGHTLY at it but said it was quite mild.

Sarah. 27-02-2008 11:31 AM

I was lying in bed awake at the time and all of a sudden everything started to shake and i was terrified, even though it was like a few seconds. I remember the one in 2002 i think it was, and that was even more scary. But i couldn't sleep for the rest of the night because I was expecting aftershocks, i'm soo tired today.

Spike 27-02-2008 11:34 AM

I felt the one in 2002 or whenever it was, I thought it was me imagining it though

Dr43%er 27-02-2008 11:54 AM

It woke me here in Leicester.

Callum 27-02-2008 12:01 PM

Didn't feel a thing here in Cardiff.
