Ok so we survived "Doomsday 10/9/08"

but will the end of the Mayan calendar signify the end of the world

(Never got round to watching the full video this morning as I had to go to College)

Right, the Mayans never predicted that the world would end in 2012. They celebrated the end of a full cycle(Which 21/12/12 is.)




Nor did the King at the time believe it would end in 2012.

Time is a man made concept so if the planet goes on forever we'll run out of years, just as they have run out of the calendar. Thats all there is to it.

The world is always ending these days, first it was some day a few years ago, then 6/6/06 then yesterday and now that ...

A possible second Doomsday.

The 21/12/12 which I do not think is Doomsday although the Mayan calendar has been wrong many times before.

No it won't happen. I don't see the Mayans still around so I doubt their calendar has any real credibility - ignoring the fact that time is a man-made concept, as Tom said.

A year is just a number and numbers are infinite so how can we run out?

On a practicality level they would, because I don't think they'd decide to have year numbers that by the time you have written them its the next year which would probably happen :tongue:

I guess when we get to 100,000 we will start from 0 again and the "AD" will change to different letters. Can't see us surviving that long anyway althought the Earth itself will still be here.

Yeah, some other species will have took over (either that or an evolved Human) or maybe we will dump this planet for another

Its human nature to predict these things.. All of them so far were wrong(Otherwise we wouldn't be here :D)

But in the last 5 years they have predicted that the world would end about 3 times now. And why is it always the 21st Dec?? Thats really weird because my grandad died on the 21st Dec 2005.

Doesn't matter anyway, if it happens it happens, and we can't do anything about that...So it doesn't bother me if it happens or not.

Yeh acidburn i try not to look at these things, because if it happens ill not really know about it before hand and wont worry.

Xander made a good point though, the calander just ends on 2012, but they don't actually know what the mayans stopped for.. Maybe they ran outta ink xD

I read them anyway, I'd rather know what they think will happen rather than guess :L

I read some where while reading up last year on the 'big-bang' experiment, that this will climax around the date of the end of the mayan calandar. Personally I think the media is trying to link the stories for a good story or roundabout. If there was anything eg. a planet colision or big bang experiment mess up then the government would hide it from us until its way to late to worry. What will be will be I suppose
