was it that they all used their nicknames instead of their real names?

Yes that is right, their real names are Paul, Paul, Joanne and Katherine. Also forgot to mention Penny whose real name is Lisa. Sada and Nadia had different names when they were born but didn't include those because they have changed their names legally, as far as I know.
