Are There Any Atheist\'s Here That Get Looked Down On For Being So?
I was just wondering because im atheist and some people of different religions usually look down on me. Some people even say that im wrong for being Athiest :conf2: but if i told them they were wrong for being there religion, then i'd be accused of all this rubbish
im not offending any other religions by the way, i just wanna make that clear im not like that. |
I'd say it was the other way around...atheists are typically a lot more judgmental about people with religious beliefs. That's the feeling I got when I recently stated my beliefs about creationism anyway.
|
I still class myself as a non-practicing Catholic even though I don't bother with church, will argue against God's existence etc but I find its more Atheists who look down on religious people ...
|
I am gonna have to agree with Shaun! The thing is, in religion, youre taught not to look down on anyone. Atheist have more judgemental characteristics I think! they have this attitude of, you stupid religious people believe in fairytalles.

I am Atheist. I think Richard Dawkins 'The God Delusion' Book is bliss. And no need to look down on anyone but never bash a bible over my head. |

I don't think they should be looked down upon. People are allowed to believe in a religion, so atheists should be allowed to not believe in a religion. Simple.
|
Athiests don't look down on people moreso than Religious people do I don't think. Essentially each side thinks they are right, so there's always going to be people looking down on those who don't share their beliefs. Also I can't remember where I read this, but only 11% of people are athiest, so numerically there are always going to be more religous people looking down :)
Athiesm encourages free-thinking, and tries to promote people to look at things for themselves and not from such a one sided viewpoint, which has been handed down by generations of people who are too narrow-minded to believe anything but what they've been told. Also, your sig is quite big :cat: |
You know what's not a good thing to do? Say you're an atheist when you don't realise there's a nun behind you and there's sick people everywhere....
I think it's pretty equal,we're not scared presay of religion but we don't like to be around it,they don't like to around the disbelief of it. |

Like I said in religion, people are taught not to look down on others who are different. Its one of the laws of being religious. An atheist, does not have those values and its obvious from just the posts on this thread. |
Yes I get looked down on, but I look down on religious people. So its equal both ways, I think they are stupid, they think I'm stupid.

If I walk into a church meeting one weekend, state my beliefs as an athiest and say I think every person in front of me is crazy and narrow minded.. do you think those people will not 'look down' on me? |
YOure proving my point more and more by your statements. YOu cant put one sentence without a put down. If you did what you said, they wouldnt look down on you, you will just be thrown out, of course! And no, they dont stay away from debates because they dont have points, its because religion is based on faith. Its not based on logic and 1+2=3. There is no sense for a religious person to have a discussion about religion with an atheist. BUt you will hardly ever see a real religious person, show disrespect because of someones beliefs. They woudl never call them stupid, or assume that like you so eloquently put it "heck most of them probably dont even go to church or follow anything that the bible say". Thats another put down. Face it, by nature, an atheist will always have a superiority complex, where a religious person (by that I mean a real one), is humble, and knows how to treat people with respect regardless.
|
Religious people tend to be nicer people imo. Some people don't follow whatever, they just use it as some kind of code to live their life by, and how to become a better person. I'm talking in general here, not just Christianity. I find that a lot of religious people are very peaceful people, like to avoid conflict, look for the best in people etc. If people are happy with their beliefs and they are causing no harm then I don't think they should be looked down upon for anything. That goes for Atheism too, although a lot of Atheists constantly feel the need to prove religion is pointless.

'Awwww, how sad is this person's life that even though they don't believe in God or any religion they would bother to watse their time in a church' If you're not religious why do you have to bother the people who are? btw, is it not more narrow minded to have no beliefs. Religious people have faith in things that aren't blatantly obvious in the world. Whereas, atheists don't tend to believe in anything they can't see or touch. |
Im Agnostic really, but I have learnt from religions and can see the positive aspects to having faith and being compassionate, tolerant, caring about others and developing spiritually as a person etc. I think its ridiculous and narrowminded for either side to look down on the other and not even attempt to understand anything about where the other is coming from. Intolerance and claiming superiority over ones own way of looking at things is narrowminded and dumb...man!...and sometimes dangerous
|
No I have never been looked down on for being atheist and I know some very religious people
but I admit I do look down on religious people, I think they are all very stupid people lacking something to believe in all that crap |
I am and nearly all the religious people in my year are in my form group and they all were in shock or laughed at me when i told them i didnt belive in god!!!
Even the really stupid people were talking to me as if i had learning difficulty and couldnt understand how i didnt believe in god! |

They need to read 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins. This a is Free Nation some need to be told that , sometimes. |

"If you're not religious why do you have to bother the people who are?" I could ask the same about all religious people 'bothering' young children who's minds aren't formed enough to figure out what they want to believe in, but the church loves to get them on their side when they are young. I'm was raised as a christian, was baptised/confirmed and all that rubbish, but when I was a young teenager I didn't know any better. All the doctrine that was pumped into me I believed, because I wasn't taugh an alternative. |

A lot of religious people don't bother teaching or trying to convert other people and just get on with their own lives. Obviously there is the odd moron who'll stand in the middle of a busy street with a megaphone shouting "Jesus loves you" but really thats just the religious equivalent of the bus adverts in London saying there is nothing ... |
Me!
I'm an athiest. Don't even get me started on people who preach in the streets. One guy told me he pitied me for being gay and started calling me+my mates a heathen. 'twas rather funny though. Just laughed at him x] |

The majority of my family are Roman Catholic and my small cousins (between 4 and 10) don't have God drummed into them. They are told about God and learn about it at school but they aren't forced or bullied into anything. The idea of something being pumped into you growing up could be used to back anyone's opinion because we are all influenced by our surroundings and social network. That's not religious or any other group of people 'getting them on their side', that's nature. |

I am an atheist. My parents did not ever once say to me "God isn't real, this is what you must believe in." They did not baptise me, I only ever went to church with school for holiday services, I found it a chore and generally found myself thinking it was a load of rubbish when I was there. Nobody told me to think that, I gathered that myself when I was about 9 years old. I don't ever get looked down on being an atheist, but that's maybe because I don't go around telling people I'm an atheist, or speaking about religion at all. I find people who spout their beliefs (or lack of) to anyone who will listen really irritating in general (as in, on any issue) so I just don't speak about my beliefs openly. |
I like this quote and I am going to throw it in here:

I dont look dowm on anyone either, but I always want people to believe in what I do. |
I really don't know what to believe in. But hey in 15 so i hope the adults don't think my opinion is stupid. What i DO believe in tho is Karma, the act of what goes around comes around. I believe there is a force more powerful looking over us, whether it is god or whatever. I would like to hope we are going somewhere after death.. but nobody can prove if we do and the almost definitely won't in our lifetime.
One of my main phases in life is, Who Knows? Nobody. So live your *******ing life to the full. Life is TOO short. |
