Parkinson slams Goody
http://uk.tv.yahoo.com/blog/article/138886/
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/...on2_pa_200.jpg Sir Michael Parkinson has launched a tirade against Jade Goody. The veteran broadcaster told the latest issue of Radio Times that the late reality TV star represented "all that is paltry and wretched about Britain." He said: "Jade Goody has her own place in the history of television and, while it's significant, it's nothing to be proud of. Her death is as sad as the death of any young person, but it's not the passing of a martyr or a saint or, God help us, Princess Di. "When we clear the media smoke screen from around her death, what we're left with is a woman who came to represent all that's paltry and wretched about Britain today. "She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated, ignorant and puerile. Then she was projected to celebrity by Big Brother and became a media chattel to be exploited til the day she died." His comments come just days after Jade Goody was laid to rest following a funeral that drew comparisons with that of Princess Diana. Thousands of mourners lined the streets and threw flowers as the hearse made its way to the service in Buckhurst on Saturday. |
What an insensitive, jealous old prick.

|
I agree with him.
I'm gonna get screamed at for it but it's my opinion so I don't care. |

I think he's comments were taken out of context, it sounds like he was slamming the media coverage and the sadness of her early life, he says her death was as tragic as any young person passing. Read between the lines people.
If you were to listen to everything he said he probably didn't slam Jade much at all it's just the article has been written in such a way that creates a story. But we'll never know that sicne we only got the snippets which paints him as the antagonist of the story. |
Ahem Parkinson your 100% correct
Am glad he has the balls to actually Voice His opinion |
He's slamming British celebrity culture more than her, per se.
But he's spot on. |
i agree with him too

I don't think he's slamming Goody, he's moreso slamming the celeb-culture we hold in Britain.
One thing I don't like, is his pompous nature though. The way he starts his rant as "She was brought up on a sink estate, as a child came to know drugs and crime, was barely educated" - this is hardly a negative portrayal of someone, it's unfortunate for her - but this in itself doesn't make her a bad person. |
sink estate barely educated don't make you all that is paltry and wretched about Britain. What made him so special?

Parkinson was ranked 8th in a list of the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes drawn up by the British Film Institute in 2000, voted for by industry professionals. In April 2006, Parkinson was awarded Honorary Patronage of the University Philosophical Society (Trinity College, Dublin). He was voted number 20 in ITV's "TV's 50 Greatest Stars". On 4 June, 2008 his knighthood was bestowed by the Queen at Buckingham Palace Since 2005, Parkinson has served as the President of the Sports Journalists' Association of Great Britain, the largest national organisation of sports journalists in the world. Parkinson became the first Chancellor of Nottingham Trent University on 11 November, 2008. His role includes representing the university and conferring degrees at graduation ceremonies. He is quoted as saying, “I am honoured to be offered the chancellorship at Nottingham Trent University. In television I have always worked with young, ambitious people and I am keen to be involved in this university which helps to realise the aspirations of the young. It will also give me an opportunity to see what I missed!” |

100% Correct Parky.

I agree with him.
Many people die of cancer and their names aren't all over the papers. And I certainly don't think she should be compared to Princess Diana!!!! |
He's slamming the celebrity culture, the media for giving it so much coverage and the public for their appetite for it. And he's one hundred percent right.

Yes he is right and the BBC Radio Times hates Big Brother so for there readers they all agree. |
Sign of the Times Arista..

I think if he wants to make that point he should only use her as an example and not have a go at her, she was a nice woman, maybe not educated and not a 'lady' but is that honestly her fault? It is all she knows, she shouldnt be called Princess Di, but thats exactly what she is for the poorer generation.
She helped a lot of people and most of the time had a smile, but she was relatable to the poorer section of britain, I think people like Parkinson need to realise that not everyone is brought up with a great education and you do get the more common people from poorer familes. It is shallow minded to think that, but I think Parkinson was getting there but then got a bit too personal. As bold as this sounds, Jade Goody is the Princess Di for the poorer society. |
I agree with that Fom, I've been trying to convey that for so long.
|
Theres a huge class divide over it
People who are middle class and above (or pretend to be that they are when really they're just high end working class) tend to look down thinking they're better Working class seem to be more sympathetic and accepting, probably because one of "them" managed to make something of themselves i think he has every right to put his opinion across and good on him for having those views especially after everything but to say shes everything whats wrong with the country is unfair imo |
****** me Fom, that's offensive.
I'm from your 'poorer' area, and I don't find her relatable at all! |
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but my opinion is that I believe his opinion is wrong and un fair. He was getting to the right point and then went too far.

I didn't look up too her but I knew people like her, and I was happy for her while she was alive. |
I don't relate to her at all. I was brought up on a council estate, and we never had money. I don't even relate to her. I made the most of what I had, and made the most of the education I had. Ok, I didn't go to university, but I left school, got a job, and attended college part-time.
I don't consider that I 'made something of myself' or dragged myself out of the gutter. I definitely don't consider people like Jade Goody to be "one of us". She's the furthest thing from me or anyone I relate to. And, to be honest, you come over as a middle-class spoilt brat in that post. |
Quote:
I think thats what he's getting at when he says relatable |
Quote:
I am not middle class and I am not spoilt. |
You have to admit that you seriously generalised the 'poorer people'.
If someone were to post on here generalising about Blacks or Muslims, I'm sure I wouldn't be the only one who would get *****ed off about it. Maybe I'm the only one on here who wants to admit I'm not middle-class. |

And I just admitted I am not middle-class, but I don't think thats important. |
