The issue wasn't what he WAS but what he WANTED! Bea told him Noirin wasn't on the menu AND was being enjoyed by Siavash.
Disappointment AND honour with respect to his friend Siavash left him little option. Bea KNEW this.

you what?

Tom is a thoroughly decent and straightforward guy. He liked Noirin but was cautious about her until he had worked her out a bit. He was beginning to think that she was at last seeing Marcus for what he was. If things had developed he would have shown hr respect and been a gentleman with her.
Bea told him that Noirin had indeed moved on from Marcus but was now developing a relationship with Siavash. Told Tom that any vibes he had been picking up were not in his direction. Of course he was disappointed. Equally, he thought that if Siavash was involved, a guy he liked, he would not pursue her. He had NO such qualms about treading on Marcus' toes.
So disappointment that Noirin wasn't thinking of him that way and also wanting to NOT complicate things for Siavash, he left.
