District 9

District 9 is a 2009 science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp and produced by Peter Jackson. The film stars Sharlto Copley, Jason Cope and Robert Hobbs. Copley plays the role of Wikus van de Merw, a bureaucrat assigned to evict and move an alien species stranded on Earth from one government refugee camp to another in Johannesburg, South Africa . After being exposed to an alien substance that alters his DNA, Wikus must work with the aliens to help them escape the planet and save his own humanity.

The title and premise of the film are inspired by historical events that took place in District Six, an inner-city residential area in Cape Town in South Africa under apartheid. In 1966, District 6 was declared a "whites only" area by the apartheid government and for the next several decades, 60,000 people were forcibly removed and relocated to Cape Flats, 25 kilometres away.

Release date: 4. September [UK]

I'm a huge sci fi nut so this one is a must see for me.

Johann 25-08-2009 11:28 PM

This movie is FAAANTASTIC. One of the best sci-fi movies to come out in a long time. Its so realistic and it gives you the sense that the events could actually happen on our planet one day. A must see for sci-fi fans and a must see for anyone looking for great entertainment.

Warning: The violence is rather xtreme. Squeamish people beware!

Nope, this is an old school sci fi that ties into modern day themes and troubles. That's what I love about the genre at it's best; it has this ability to filter into our subconscious and reveal our own social issues and troubles as a species in a thought provoking and entertaining fashion. Deeply allegorical and highly intelligent. Can't wait to see it.

I was thinking this movie was not going to live up to the hype, but man was I wrong.

The first 20 is kinda boring, but after that its fantastic.

8.5/10

What a film. Absolutely wonderful and so refreshing to see a mainstream movie showing such balls when usually they just churn out disposable entertainment. This film, along with having moments of fun and action, had a real power to it and I was literally on the edge of my seat with tension as it neared it's conclusion, such was the scope and impact of the narrative that unfolded before my eyes. Sci fi at it's best.

It was...surprising. Not what I expected. Very gripping and good, but I don't know, it was missing something...

You hyped it up too much in your mind, that's all.

The way it was filmed gave it that realistic feel - something I find really adds to the movie experience. It was just superbly done.

Hmm, possibly. I think there was a bit too much gore at times [I'm ridiculously squeamish though] but overall it was a great film.

Went to watch this Film lastnight with the boys, and It was awesome! Peter Jackson paid the maker of the game Halo $30million to come up with a movie and this is it!
Very well thought out and DIFFERENT from any other film I have seen before!

I posted a thread on this without realising there was this.
But to sum up it was brilliant. Very realistic and the Copley's performace (main character) was brilliant... especially considering that it was his first role.

Yeh I was quite surprised myself that it is his first role. Didnt he get randomly picked for the role. What a lucky guy lol

He was a producer, not very well known, and they randomly selected him, and now people ae saying he gave the best actor performance of 2009... very lucky, apparently i heard he is on his way to get loads of nominations for the Movie Awards.

RtooDee2 25-09-2009 07:29 AM

Really enjoyed it. Shame there isnt more films like these around.
I give it a 9/10. Very cool indeed!

NettoSuperstar! 15-01-2010 11:57 AM

finally got round to watching it, bloody good film on so many levels, got everything you could want in a film there...cleverly done, social comment, humourous at times, action packed, emotional...just need a sequel, hate loose ends!

Niamh. 15-01-2010 12:19 PM
