TiBB's Photography Contest >> Round 1 Photos Posted [Lewis Eliminated]

This week the photographers had two themes. The universal theme of Weather and the themes of Halloween & Bonfire Night. Lets see how they did.

Voting details are at the bottom of this very long post

Group One; Weather & Halloween.
Group one had the themes Halloween & Weather. Here are their photos for this week.

Arneldo//
Weather
Title: The Calm Warmth
Inspiration: I thought everyone might submit rainy miserable photos so I decided I'd submit this photo which I hope comes across as warm.

Halloween
Title: The 3 Witches
Inspiration: Taken on Halloween night - the fireworks to me look like 3 magical figures surrounded by the darkness associated with Halloween.

---------------------------------

bronaaaaa//
Weather
Title: Ugly Beauty
Inspiration: It's the view from my house. I took this a while ago, because I liked the way the clouds were with the light coming through. I picked it because I thought it kinda showed beauty even on a **** day.

Halloween
Title: Hallowe'en
Inspiration: I took this on hallowe'en. No where around has fireworks or anything and I live in the country so I don't get trick or treaters and all, so for me, this is hallowe'en..I think the trees and the moonlight makes in eerie and shizz.

Weather - FAILED TO SEND IN
Halloween
Title: Trick or Treat?
Inspiration: It's a complete fail of a photo really, I couldn't find the camera so had to use my Iphone and the writing was meant to be written in blood but the substance I used was very unco-operative and plus the lighting sucked. It's meant to be a sinister take on trick or treating. Originally I was gonna put some razorblades in the crisp packet and the text was gonna say 'check your treat before you eat' but I couldn't find any so i just went with this.

Jéssícá//
Weather
Title: Potential Rain
Inspiration: It is the view from an upstairs window in my house.

Title: Mini Me
Inspiration: 2 vampires for Halloween.

Nate//
Weather
Title: Change
Inspiration: I tried to show the change in weather over the past couple months summer coming into autumn and then into winter. The dying palm tree and the drenched sun chair hopefully display this.

http://i33.tinypic.com/2vlli4l.png

Bonfire Night
Title: Remember
Inspiration: I tried to do something different. I used the matches as an element of fire/dynamite the same with the burnt paper, which reads ''Remember remember'' - a well known slogan to do with Guy Fawkes.

http://i35.tinypic.com/dxxsi1.png

-----------------------------------

PJ//
Weather
Title: I wanna hold like they do on christmas
Inspiration: I took this in january when we had loads of snow,i looked out the window and thought i think im going to take a photo now,let me just fetch my camera.

Bonfire Night
Title: Fire Photo
Inspiration: Im not going to a bonfire this year so i just used what i had and got this.

My Comments

Arneldo:I love both of your photos Aaron, the first is beautiful and the second even though I think it may be a bit fireworknighty, I still adore the idea behind it and it's overall a stunning photo. Good work!

Brona: I love the simplicity of the weather photo Brona, and I love the idea & simplicity behind the Halloween picture. The only problem maybe is that people wouldn't know what was going on if there wasn't a caption? Both good though.

Dezzy: Not sending one in already puts you at a disadvantage, however I do like the ideas behind the photo you managed to send in. You're right about the quality and that it could have been done better but I still like the idea.

Jessica: I think yours could have been done a bit better Jess, I personally prefer the Halloween picture, simply because I feel it has more to it. I like the way you used an orange instead of a pumpkin aswell.

Patrick: I hoped someone would use a rainbow in their picture and I'm glad you did. I like the idea you had for the Halloween picture but it feels like you had no other picture so just used that. I do like your photos though Patrick.

GypsyGoth: I love both of your photos and I love how you captured the sparkler. My only tip would be maybe to make your photos a tad bigger. Still, brilliant photos.

NateI like the idea behind this as it's different just to using weather however I didn't think the plant looked particually dead so didn't work as well. I do love the Bonfire photo though, it's simple yet portrays a message.

PJ I like that you used a snowy picture but I don't think the quality is very good, and it's only a photo of your garden. I like the idea behind the second photo though and how it's different to the others. Maybe it doesn't portray Bonfire Night as well. If possible, quality needs to be improved. Still I like your ideas PJ.

Overall, well done on the photos this week guys. Luckily, none of you who bothered will be kicked out this week.

I shall now be doing my rating to decide which photographers are the best

Shaun 06-11-2009 06:43 PM

I'll give my comments in the order of the photos as they're posted :)

So firstly:

Arneldo:
1. Weather - it's perdy, it's sunny, it ticks the weather box, it's a nice photo, all very lovely. Snaps for Aaron.
2. Hallowe'en - I thought this was supposed to be Hallowe'en? :p I can sort-of see your reasoning...but...IT'S FIREWORKS. It's a nice photo though.

bronaaaa:
1. I always looked forward to your entries in Lewis' photography contest, and this first weather pic demonstrates why. I love the pockets of sunshine poking through the gaps in the clouds, but if I was going to picky I think you've concentrated on the landscape rather than the weather? But it's a great photo.
2. Very creepy. You didn't go down the obvious route for me (which would be a Jack O'Lantern or something) - and it's quite an atmospheric photo.

Dezzy:
1. tut.
2. I'm assuming that's tomato sauce... erm. I'm not sure what to make of it really. It's certainly individual, and creative, but I'm not so big on the actual final result. Don't play with knives.

Jessica:
1. Erm. Unless the aspect of weather you're aiming for was "dull" I wouldn't put this too highly. This picture makes me gloomy. Which I guess provokes a reaction...not terrible, but not good.
2. I love this photo for some reason, and I think it might be because that's quite clearly an orange :p

Lewis:
YOU STUPID BITCH.

Patrick:
1. I hate to say this but you've got the strongest photo combination in your group. Incredibly lucky to get a rainbow picture - I'm not sure if it's weather but I'll be lenient and say it is. It's a great photo.
2. Again, a good idea, great make-up, good costume, it has a cute babba. Great photos!

------------------------------------------------------

CaraRawr:
YOU STUPID BITCH.

GypsyGoth:
1. I love this photo, very autumnal and wet and dark and oddly this is my favourite time of year so...good enough for me :p
2. Wow. I hope you didn't injure yourself getting this shot :P visually perfect, it's difficult to fault your photos. Great work.

MrGaryy:
YOU STUPID BITCH.

Nate:
1. When it comes to weather/nature shots I wouldn't opt for the black and white option. I'm not entirely convinced by your reasoning really...I can see what you're aiming for, but I'm not sure this shot demonstrates it.
2. Ooooooh. Very different. I like the thought and effort that's gone into this pic. Great photo! :)

PJ:
1. Using old pics is generally a no-no for me :p but it's a very pretty picture so I'll let you off.
2. Interesting display of using what you've got I guess...but it's a no from me. LOL.

Arneldo 06-11-2009 06:47 PM

Just a quick explanation of the whole halloween/fireworks thaang. I was drunnkk on Halloween. But the photos of the fireworks were actuality taken on Halloween (prior to my drunkness). so yehh. Soz.

King Gizzard 06-11-2009 06:55 PM

Thanks for your comments shaun and sam i have shaky hands when i try and concentrate thats why the photos are so blury or is this me trying to make an excuse for my 5MP camera?

CaraRawr 06-11-2009 07:09 PM

omg **** i'm so sorry. the firework display finished late so i wasn't able to send my photos in on time >_<

Sam! 06-11-2009 07:25 PM

Guys come on we need some more votes

Sticks 06-11-2009 07:49 PM

Time for me to be Simon Cowell

Arneldo

Weather shot:
Slightly washed out feel as if this was a colour photo taken in the 1970s, and you seem to have two items on the right, which if this was 35mm film I would have thought was a hair on the negative. There also seems to be some sort of ring hovering on the water to the right. Not sure what that is, maybe a session with a lens cloth would not be out of order.

I am also the powerlines on the left are a bit of a distraction.

Generally taking pictures of the Sun is problematic, and best done when the sun is low in the sky. If sunny weather was meant to be the theme, then pictures of brilliantly lit cumulus clouds tend to make a better bet

Halloween
Sorry, but if this was the Bonfire Night group, maybe. This does seem like straining at a gnat

bronaaaaa

Weather
Very Wuthering Heights and moody, even if a tad under exposed

Halloween
Looks like the tree has some glow-worms visiting it, was that meant to be the Moon. Sorry but this does not speak to me of Halloween.

Dezzy

Weather
Not submitter

Halloween
I agree, the lighting sucks. The blood is so obviously ketchup and nothing like a blood pool.

Jéssícá

Weather
The image seems rather non de-script to me and the film quality reminds me of a camera I got from eat cream crackers. to get any result I needed a 400 ASA film. In other words it looks grainy. Great for sunsets and more moody shots

Halloween
This still life was clever and I had to look twice at the "pumpkin" same grainy style image, however unlike the weather picture this does carry and makes it look like it was done as an oil painting.

LewisLeona
Failed to send in either

Patrick

Weather
I have taken pictures of rainbows and sorry but in terms of inspiration, I'm not getting it from this. It looks slightly bleached and rainbows need to be a bit under exposed to get the moody atmosphere required

Halloween
If you had the elder child standing up, that would have been better and the black cape gets lost somewhat against the black sofa

CaraRawr
Failed to send in either

GypsyGoth

Weather
Nice try, light ok, but compositionally it would have been nicer to see more of the scene, and maybe picked up some rings as rain drops hit the puddle.

Bonfire night
Hmmmm - Not convinced this could be a sparkler on a drink. Sparkler shots are best if someone can be seen holding them

MrGaryy
Failed to send in either

Nate

Weather
Sorry, but even with the decision to do this in black and white, this just does not speak to me of weather, just someone's back yard.

Bonfire Night
A good still life shot in black and white, quite reasonable shot at this.

PJ

Weather
The secret to a good snow scene is a polarizing filter if you are doing colour, a yellow filter if you are doing black and white, and getting it in focus

Bonfire Night
Looks more like someone was trying to fake the totality shot you get with a total solar eclipse. Does not speak to me of bonfire

\PJ/ 06-11-2009 07:55 PM

Thanks sticks...i guess.

CaraRawr 06-11-2009 08:00 PM

I love the Firework Pic!!
