The Colour Orange
Title:
Inspiration: I know it's not really the best orange picture, but my flash wouldn't work for my other idea D: But yeah, prerry self explanitory, an orange tree :P .

The Colour Green
Title:Amongt the Darkness
Inspiration: I liked the idea of a colour among darkness so I fitted that idea into my picture!

'What Is Life?'
Title: Creation
Inspiration: I wanted an image to make you think, something that showed life in some form.

The Colour Purple
Title:
Inspiration: I looked around my house and took pictures of purple, they all turned out rubbish. Then I found this inflatable chair, with a butterfly pattern.

Nate//
'What Is Life?'
Title: Sun
Inspiration: Found this one very hard don't know if it displays the theme. The sun powers life, there wouldnt be life without it, so effectively it is life?

The Colour Red
Title: Roses are Red
Inspiration: Roses are as red as you can get. Pretty self explanitory.

To pass judgement

What is Life:
Focus on the foreground is good from a technical level and it is obvious this is taken early in the day, from the dew on the web, and the background out of focus, as it should be for this kind of shot. I once had a go at pushing depth of field and ended up with a gigantic tree stump.

That said, I suppose it would have been nice to have got a web that was not as damaged, but I tend to be more a perfectionist here. As for depicting the theme, I feel I need to be given the theme and the image needs to shout that theme without me needing to read the title justifying it. I'm sorry to say, inspite of the technical details of getting this image right, it does not in my opinion shout out that theme.

The Colour Orange
Hmm it may be a reasonable attempt at an orange tree, but if I was looking at the general theme of a particular colour, I would expect that colour to dominate, and from what I can see only one bunch of three oranges with one other nearby are actually orange. The others are more red and the predominate colour is green from the leaves.

CaraRawr

What is life
Brief, Moody to the point made atmospheric by use of black and white photography. Does what it says on the tin as it were. If I were doing it I would probably not have had the lady's face obscured by the card and have got her to give a deeply sullen expression, to match the mood of the shot, but then that's me. I have to admit though I could see this as one of those Athena post cards.

The Colour Green
Well it has green in it. After the other entry by the contestant, this one comes as a bit of a let down for me. Yes it is a green blanket on a bed with black sheets, however I could be wrong, but the area of black may be just about equal to the area of the green blanket, so I am not sure if it really summarises green to me.

GypsyGoth

What is Life
Excuse me, is that an orange on a pink blanket or an egg it is not exactly clear, so for me it fails to cut it.

The Colour Purple
While most of the picture contains purple as a background colour, the foreground butterfly is actually white, so I am not sure this speaks purple to me. To use an old cliché, "Close but no cigar"

Nate

What is life
Well as a cloud shot for an atmospheric day, possibly, however with the theme, what is life, I am not sure this fit's the bill. I read the blurb about the Sun being the source of life, but that sounds too much like a justification to submit an entry, so I am not convinced this satisfies the theme.

The Colour Red
If you look past the soft focus, compositionally this is well achieved, and it does speak to me about the colour red. Thinking about that soft focus, given that roses are also meant to signify affairs of the heart maybe this just about gets away with it, however it probably would mean it would not be up to commercial standard which would require them to be crisp. A valiant effort.

Patrick

What is life
No No No!

This looks like a tawdry holiday snap of some unfortunate who is just about to hurl into that pool. It totally misses the mark completely.

The Colour Yellow

Sorry but those lights are not yellow, city lights are orange. This does not say yellow to me in any way shape or form.

My Comments

Brona
- I adore this photo, the meaning behind it and just generally the photo are beautiful. Great photo :)
- I like the photo, there isn't a lot of orange in the photo but that doesn't make a difference. I like the idea and the photo.

CaraRawr
- Very simple but quite effective I think. The only critism is that I asked you to answer the question, but still nice photo.
- Again very simple but I'm not as keen on this one, to me it looks like a t-shirt scrunched up on a black sheet. I do like the idea with darkness and everything though.

GypsyGoth
- I think it's simple yet brilliant, I love how you've used the egg to show new life and I like how the pink compliments the photo. Very nice!
- Not as good as the egg one but still I like it. I think it could have been better if there was more to the photo though.

Nate
- It's a lovely photo but I don't think it qualifys for the theme as much as the others do. Great photo though.
- Much better, I love the whole composition of the photo and how you've set the roses out and everything. Good job!

Patrick
- To be honest I have no idea how that shows what life is. The resort looks nice though lol
- Not really yellow but I do like the way you were going with this, much better than the other.

Shaun 22-11-2009 03:53 PM

Okay so.

Brona:
Life- This is a stunning picture, and with the right argument behind it this could be a unique interpretation on "life". However, unfortunately your reasoning was a little bit rushed, and as such some might be scratching their heads. However, with my wandering mind I can quickly put together the broken web represents the fragility of life, how the web = a home, how complex and beautiful it is, etc.
Colour- I have to agree with Sticks, I'd have liked orange to be the dominating colour. That said, the colour orange was a difficult one compared to others [green would have been a piece of piss :p] and you did a capable job with what you had. Again a nice picture.

Jessica
ew.

CaraRawr
Life + Colour - this is a major disappointment to me; last week's photos from you were brilliant, but this time they're lazy and really low quality. With green there was a lot of potential for nature shots. :\

GypsyGoth:
Life- A brilliant interpretation of the theme, and a very simple and effective photo.
Colour- It could be better, but again, purple was a difficult colour, and so you used what you had to good effect.

Nate.
Life - a good reasoning behind the photograph saved this, upon first impression I was a bit "well that's a sky." it's an aesthetically pleasing photo, and a good interpretation of the theme.
Colour - Definitely the best colour photograph. It's pretty, it's deep in the colour you've been assigned, and it's creative.

Patrick:
Life - not entirely convinced on how this represents life if I'm honest. a nice photo though :p
Colour - I was willing to allow a little le-way with this colour, as the only thing that immediately springs to mind is the sun. That said, daisie, daffodils [okay it's winter :p] and what not - I like this picture, but there were a lot of better potential shots.
