algebra help? D:

In football matches 3 points are awarded for a win, 1 point is awarded for a draw, no points are awarded for a loss. Jim's football team will play 20 matches next year. He expects his team to win p of them, draw q of them and lose the rest of the matches. Write down an expression, in terms of p and q, for

a) the total number of matches Jim expects his team to lose next year.
b) the total number of points Jim expects his team to be awarded next year.

can someone give me the answer and explain how they got it pls? i srsly can't work it out.

Stu 27-11-2009 06:39 PM

How in the name of all that is good can a football team win P matches? Maths is silly.

Sam! 27-11-2009 06:40 PM

haha I do alevel maths and I have no idea.. go me.

LemonJam 27-11-2009 06:41 PM

3P + 1Q ... that's as far as I can work out.

LemonJam 27-11-2009 06:42 PM

20 - (p+q) = losses is the first I think...

20 matches take away the ones they've won and drawn equals their losses?

Don't count on me for this LOL

Stu 27-11-2009 06:45 PM

*Clean up on aisle four. Stu's brain has poured out of his nose.*

LemonJam 27-11-2009 06:46 PM

I'm trying to solve the second now haha and I'm a ****ing Art and Music student.

InOne 27-11-2009 06:47 PM

Me and Maths fell out a long time ago. Never crossed paths since.

LemonJam 27-11-2009 06:48 PM

a] 20 - (p+q) = losses
b] 3p + q = Amount of points

Maybe?

Hope I've helped in some way.

Same here. I'm appalling at Maths. I never showed up for any classes in the early years and it's a downward spiral from there. If you don't know the basics in Maths you can't do the later stuff. It all builds up and up.

Can't climb a ladder if the bottom half's rungs are missing .

ILoveTRW 27-11-2009 06:50 PM

surely its just

a) 20-(p+q)
&
b) 3p+q

what standard of maths is this

Stephanie 27-11-2009 06:53 PM

lmfao this is some gcse maths **** higher level crap and i'm so rubbish at it
i've been doing algebra for 4 hours i have so much to do and my dad does't know **** all

thanks everyone

Jords 27-11-2009 06:54 PM

a. 20 - (p+q)
b. 3p + q

a - p and q are wins and draws, and if they play 20 games, 20 games - p and q = the amount of games left which he will lose.

b - he gets 3 points per win, the letter p represents the number of wins, and 1 point per draw, the letter q represents the number of draws.

to be honest this is quite easy, i had some **** about exponential graphs as the last question on my GSCE paper a few year ago

Stu 27-11-2009 06:56 PM

My brain is literally incapable of understanding Maths. I'm extremely biased towards right brain mentality and am pretty much hopeless at any abstract logistical tasks.

I don't think it's that bad, some bits are tricky but overall it's ok I spose. A2 will probably be wellll difficult.

LemonJam 27-11-2009 07:00 PM

I never got measuring shapes. Always ****ed me over.

Jack_ 27-11-2009 07:02 PM

first day at a new school and you get a 10 page maths booklet? i'd die.

I thought I was good at Maths pmsl, but this confused me and now I can't believe how simple the answer is.

Id say A2 is just the same hardness, once you understand differentiation and integration ALevel maths is a doddle, the only problem is not many people can understand it

So glad i'm not in school, would hate to be 14 again, such an awful age.
