Maths

Inspired by Johnathan's homework thread...

What is the point of half of the things you learn in maths...surely all you need to know is, how to do sums, learn about measurements and how to do bar charts....not how to determine the square route of the length from Earth to Uranus, then adding Y to it and subtracting it by Z

Firewire 29-11-2009 07:47 PM

EXACTLY CHEWY.

Tell that to my maths teacher.

ILoveTRW 29-11-2009 07:48 PM

because it is the best subject ever

Hate maths. God i'm so glad i'm not in school. I agree with OP, better to learn practical stuff. Algebra is awful!!!

Scarlett. 29-11-2009 07:50 PM

i got an E for it in school, though that was mostly due to the teacher being nice to the twats of the class, then again, I would have got better marks if they cut the **** out of maths

probably not because then the grading system would be different meaning those who got an A woulds till get an A and those who got an E would still get an E because they are an E standard student.

I think there are definitely some aspects that are so unnecessary, like geometry or trigonometry. But most of it comes into play in your life in more ways than you would think.

I would have learned better if I didnt randomly get footballs in face in class or other assorted shite, while the teacher stood there and talked to the twats about their weekend, rather than helping the rest of us

Well they had one they brought in for break time/dinner

Apart from basic Maths, it's an absolute crime that once you reach a certain age it's not an optional subject. 99.9% of it is abstract, tedious and utterly pointless unless you choose a certain career path.

Sam! 29-11-2009 08:52 PM

I do think most of the stuff is incredibly pointless, then again I did take it for a-level. But that's not cause I enjoy it but cause I thought I could do well in it.

I really enjoyed maths, got a C, not perfect but was chuffed with myself.

But.. since leaving school, i have not has too use almost 90% of the stuff i learnt, but am sure i will do sometime in the future.

The most maths topic i use now is probability of my numbers coming on the lotto haha :joker:

Mrluvaluva 01-12-2009 12:40 AM

How many times in life do you actually have to use a bar chart?

Lauren 01-12-2009 01:07 PM

Bane of my ****ing life LOL. I have dyscalculia, to those that don't know. Which meant throughout school I was top set for everything but maths, and when I couldn't solve a problem I was given detention because they thought I was just not putting effort in. Then I got diagnosed and the teacher stopped teaching me because he thought there was 'no point' since I'd never get it.

Ramsay 01-12-2009 01:10 PM

The Majority of maths is pointless
i remember for like 20 mins of a maths class a few months ago the entire class was tellin our teacher that maths is pointless and where would we ever be doing alegbra in real life
and she kept saying was
Oh its in your leaving cert

Princess 01-12-2009 01:16 PM

For Leaving Cert it was a subject we had to do(along with Irish, don't get me started on that). I wasn't using Maths or Irish for my points which my Irish teacher didn't mind but my Maths teacher was always like try harder, try harder! It's like I have 6 subjects I need to do good in,leave me the feck alone!

Jords 01-12-2009 03:36 PM

I hate maths too :joker:

Once or twice, it is more useful than the other **** that is taught

Crimson Dynamo 01-12-2009 03:54 PM

In life 99% of us have to work at things we do not really care for, understand, have any use for. yet it pays the bills.

maths is a good discipline for life.

Arithmetic (always confused with maths) is useful and is used by everyone every day.

SiaSiaSia 03-12-2009 07:24 PM

Maths is useful for a lot more things than you'd think.

Really complicated maths (i.e. past GCSE as I hate maths hahaa) is more useful for specified careers. Engineers have to use a lot of maths par exemple.
