Campaign to stop X Factor getting Xmas #1!!!

Rage Against The Machine are to make a bid to beat this year's winner of 'The X Factor' to the UK's Christmas Number One single position.

A Facebook group asking people to buy the band's 'Killing In The Name' has at the time of writing attracted over 45,000 members.

The group states that fans should buy the song from December 13 – the same day that this year's X Factor winner's song becomes available.

Twitter users are also showing their support for the petition by retweeting the following message: "Rage Against The Machine For Xmas No.1 #ratm4xmas See here for details http://bit.ly/inthename please RT".

Although it hasn't been confirmed yet, the winner of 'The X Factor' 2009 is reportedly set to release a cover of Miley Cyrus' 'The Climb' as their Christmas single.

A similar petition for Jeff Buckley's 'Hallelujah' was launched last year in reaction to 'The X Factor' winner Alexandra Burke releasing her version of the song for Christmas.

Although Burke still topped the UK singles charts with the song, Buckley's rendition of the Leonard Cohen classic reached the Number Two position.

This year's Christmas Number One single will be announced on December 20.

I was waitng for something like this to come along.

Pathetic.

Tom 04-12-2009 01:57 PM

If Joe wins I'll be the first person downloading RATM

But I'd rather people campaigned with something Christmassy!! Like Fairytale of New York! Start a campaign for that :)

Princess 04-12-2009 01:58 PM

Yeah good luck to them with that.....

No matter how hard anyone tries, nothing is gonna beat X Factor to Christmas Number 1 ,it's too powerful.

Care to elaborate? I think it's a nice gesture. Do you personally enjoy one man having a personal monopoly on the Christmas charts? Do you believe it healthy for the creative state of the music business or inspiring to young artists?

This'll be the last (Christmas) No. 1 of the entire decade, and I do NOT want Simon Cowell reigning the charts for a 5th year running.

Let's hope we're in for an epic big surprise this Christmas!

MarkWaldorf 04-12-2009 01:59 PM

45,000 members? lmfao the single gets that amount of downloads within hours of it being up for download.

arista 04-12-2009 02:00 PM

There is also the Joke Xmas song
Scouse 'Calm Down'

Beastie 04-12-2009 02:01 PM

Lol! Yeah I would find it hilarious if Rage Against the Machine, or any other artist beat X Factor to number 1 :D Just something different and would be funny to piss on Mr Simon Cowell's parade!

100% agreed.

Stu 04-12-2009 02:05 PM

I don't think anybody expects it to happen TBH, it's a more a tongue in cheek gesture. Even if it gets somewhere in the charts it will be funny seeing it there!

Iceman 04-12-2009 02:10 PM

for the kids who dont know this masterpiece!

Now up to 53,000. They have a week to get about another 150,000 members, otherwise some bright spark might come up with the idea of everyone downloading it 2-3 times. Then it will probably get #1.

X Factor will probably get about 200,000 sales

MarkWaldorf 04-12-2009 02:17 PM

i'm sorry but there's no way this'll get to number one. if only artists like alexandra burke and cheryl cole have topped sales of 200,000 this year, there's no hope for these guys.

and alex sold 500,000 first week last year. it should be at least 300-400,000 this year.

Stu 04-12-2009 02:18 PM

No doubt some people with a vested interest in the state of music and money to burn like a mothafucka will buy stock boxes full of the song.

The only thing I imagine people will have difficulty with though is the fact that you will have to order it by digital download. I can't imagine they still print copies of this 1992 single, and I highly doubt HMV are going to stock it anytime soon like they are going to do with the X-Factor single.

I know physical purchased count for nought these days, but still .

MarkWaldorf 04-12-2009 02:20 PM

^physical will be the main winner in this battle considering the winners single usually makes a mammoth amount in pre-orders alone.

I don't think this years winner will come close to Alexandra tbh

I think 300,000 at a complete push

Tom4784 04-12-2009 02:25 PM

It's pointless but I do hope it does well, the winner's single is always soulless and disappointing as it's basically a mould nobody can really make it their own. They might as well release the same song every year.

Beastie 04-12-2009 02:27 PM

Apparently Shane Ward is releasing his 3rd albulm next year!

And also considering the huge amount of ... well ... young children who buy the X-Factor single have to buy it physical because internet ordering is a little outside grasp.

MarkWaldorf 04-12-2009 02:30 PM

and the fact it's a miley cyrus song will only drive them out in droves. ;)
