BOTB - Poll 2 - Sex Pistols vs. Pet Shop Boys

As before, vote for the one you prefer. :) An argument for the cases...

The Sex Pistols:

God Save The Queen

Anarchy In The U.K.

Pet Shop Boys:

Suburbia

Always On My Mind

PSB. Their Brits medley earlier this year demonstrates why.

Not to mention John Lydon's a total ****ing sellout.

King Gizzard 04-12-2009 06:24 PM

TSP deffinetly

Stu 04-12-2009 06:26 PM

Pet Shop Boy's without a doubt. The Pistols were a flash in the pan. The image has lasted to this day and that one album was great, but it was just one album. Public Image LTD were a far better band. Lydon formed them because he was smart enough to realize Punk was dying and was full of severe limitations as a genre.

To be fair, though, Lydon has always said he was in it for the money.

Has to be the Sex Pistols for just the sheer impact of that album. And yeah Stu, Public Image were better.

Rise .

But the Pistols were iconic and one of the most influential punk bands. Coincidentally, Minor Threat were also a hugely influential punk band and very short-lived.

Punk is not dead -- the good stuff is just hard to find and we have bands like Green Day and Good Charlotte ******** all over it.

I agree, Punk's not dead, it's branched off in all sorts of directions, mostly for the better, some not so good. Like you say it's a shame people consider whinny **** like Green Day to be Punk.

The Pistols spearheaded a short lived cultural movement. By short lived I mean the initial Punk explosion. But that initial movement achieved very little and sonically the bands really restricted themselves due to there own stubbornness.

It this were a thread for most influential band, I would have voted for Sex Pistols, but judging on quantity, quality and diversity of back catalog music, it's pretty easy for me to vote for Pet Shop Boys.

The late 70's and 80's were a fantastic time for punk music. It was only by chance that the Sex Pistols were thrown out into the spotlight. I have to admit, there were much more talented punk bands out there around the same time as the Pistols (Subhumans, Wire, The Adicts, for example) but didn't get nearly enough recognition. And of course, by the late 70's punk had made it's way over to America and then we had bands like Ramones and Dead Kennedys. Punk was and is more popular than people think. It is just more of an underground thing now.

I picked the Sex Pistols for Enid.

Don't hit me but I don't think I ever heard a sex pistol song, and I heard Go West (I think it's called) from the others, that didn't impress me

Will listen to some Sex Pistols later.

Damaris 04-12-2009 08:19 PM

I LOVE THEM BOTH...

But Sex Pistols! I grew up with them soooo yunno.

Enid 04-12-2009 08:19 PM

The two songs Shaun posted are perhaps their most popular. Should give them a listen. You might recognise them.
