Thousands of music fans have joined a campaign to block this year's X Factor winner from clinching the Christmas number one.

Rage Against The Machine's Zack de la Rocha and Simon Cowell

RATM's Zack de la Rocha could be on track for a UK number one

More than 43,000 people have pledged to buy an anti-authority, expletive-ridden track from 1992 by Rage Against The Machine.

They are supporting a web campaign which aims to fight Simon Cowell's perceived stranglehold over the UK charts.

The Facebook group explains: "Fed up of Simon Cowell's latest karaoke act being Christmas number one?

"Me too... So who's up for a mass-purchase of the track Killing In The Name... as a protest to the X Factor b******s?"

X Factor contenders

For the last four years, the coveted festive top spot has been dominated by the winners of the Cowell-created reality show.

Shayne Ward began the unbroken X Factor run in 2005, followed by Leona Lewis, Leon Jackson and Alexandra Burke.

The campaign's creators are suggesting fans buy Killing In The Name, RATM's debut single, on December 13 instead of the latest winner's song.

The track became infamous after it was accidentally played uncensored on Radio 1.
