German or Psychology?

Hey guys, Im in Year 11 and Im at that stage where I need to think about what Im going to do for AS. I had an opening day on Wednesday, which went really well, and I chose to do on the day: Biology, Chemistry, Geography, German and Psychology.

Im thinking about becoming a doctor or something involving medicine, or a teacher - if things work out! Now I know Im going to do Chemistry and Biology for A level already, as you definitely need to do Chemistry to even be able to do be accepted on a medicine course [if you get the grades needed that is], and Biology because you need another science, and Physics is a bit boring, Im also going to do Geography for AS.

I have one more space to fill my 4th AS choice, and I cant decide between German or Psychology! I was hoping that the opening day will make one of them seem real bad but it didnt. Ive done German for 5 years, quite good and enjoy it, not great at pronoucing it though, and never done Psychology before, and would like to do something completely different, though not sure if thats a wise choice.

So just asking, which do you think will be more useful for me, or if any of you have done German or Psychology at AS/A level and what you make/made of it? :)

Psychology is the most boring thing you could possibly do, i done it for AS and you dont actually learn about it all, you just learn how to answer exam questions from day one. (well i did, anyway)

MissKittyFantastico 29-01-2010 02:27 PM

I'm not sure what it's like at A or AS level as I didn't ever do it at college but I'm finding psychology fascinating so far! But I have got pretty much stuck in straight away and it's over 4 years the degree so it may be totally different at the level you're looking at.

It depends which you think would be the most useful to you in the future I guess! But would have thought psych might be the route to go.

Ninastar 29-01-2010 02:27 PM

if your wanted to be a doctor later in life then I would say Psychology for sure

Yeah your doing a course in it arnt you Michelle? You always say how interesting it is, hmmm. The teacher we had on opening day was a legend, up for a laugh kinda thing too, made it seem great, though the other one is a big bore.. Not that what teacher Ill get will affect my choice, Im doing biology and the teacher I'll get has awful teaching ways, but Imma gonna have to adapt, lmao.

Thanks for the replies! :)

is all you do is the studies & not like anything about the behaviour, just how the study was conducted, all vailidiy reliability & all that.

In the second year it was much more practical and learning why we behave certain ways in different situations, the likelihood of behaviour occurring in a context and how you can influence behaviour. The first year was awful, even the teachers hated it.

Psychology is one of the most useful A levels to have

If you want to become a doctor, would it not make more sense to further your English qualifications? Or Math?

I hate maths and english is ok, its not necessary, you need grade B's at GCSE though.

Edit: I suppose the skills you learn in English are very similar to those you learn doing German, with the essays and that?

Braden 29-01-2010 03:56 PM

You should do German because it's an academic subject and will help you progress to get into places like University

I am sticking with it for the second year.
we get to do criminology which I can't wait for, the first year is awful though, the studies are the most depressing things on earth & research methods just killed me, they were quite easy but painfully dull!

Doesn't help that the teacher's a twat, but oh well.
Don't believe what they tell you about college, it's not as good as they make out, for me anyway lol!

I don't mean to "burst your bubble" but what GCSEs are you getting? There are people that get All As at both A level and GCSEs and get rejected, medicine is the most competitive thing for university.

I would recommend Maths and English over German and Psychology, ignore the guy who said he did Psychology and found it ****, judging by his very poor grammar I would be reluctant to consider his advice.

I also heard Maths is a must for medicine at some places (Dont know this for a fact)

The line between "medicine" and "becoming a teacher" is immense, if you want to do medicine you need to decide, work your ass off and don't get your hopes up.

Also Geography might be a little bit "weak" as it isn't really related to what you want to do, but hey, I'm the kinda guy that choses his A-levels based on prestige to get into university.

If you're interested, I'm doing: Maths, Economics, English Lit, Physics and possibly Further Maths.

Oh, and if you decide to do English, do LIT and not Language

Thanks for all the advice, and it seems you joined up to reply to this, which is great of you, thanks! :)

I know medicine courses have a lot of competition, and thats why I have becoming a teacher in mind aswell.

The GCSE's Im doing are:
Art
Biology
Chemisty
E&P (half course)
English Lang
English Lit
Geography
German
Graphics
ICT (half course)
Maths
Additional Maths
Resistant Materials - which I did last year and got grade B
Physics

I do Triple Science. :)

I also have been told you need to get yourself noticed for Uni, so have done Bronze D of E (just need to do my skill and get it all signed off), and planning to do more work experience.

I love geography so will be doing that, and I think maths is preferred in some but not compulsory.

Cool choices and yeah, I find Lang very boring but Lit is alright! :)

arista 29-01-2010 04:41 PM

Spanish is better than German

At face value second year might seem a bit dull (although its a lot better than first year) but you need to read into things a bit more. The crime module was my favourite one, the other one we did was environmental psychology

Stacey. 29-01-2010 04:43 PM

i would choose Psychology :) haha, more interesting!!
Germans hard :/

Hehe yeah I did sign up to post that but I was thinking of signing up anyway  Where in Lincolnshire are you? I'm in Lincolnshire to!

Lit is probably my least favourite out of the subjects I'm doing but it's perfect for making me look "well-rounded" and I do enjoy reading, and yep Language is not my thing either
