Pessimist or Optimist?

Is the glass half full or half empty?

I'm an optimist, believe it or not. A very big one at that. Just so happens that a lot of really, really stupid human beings prowl this place.

ILoveTRW 12-02-2010 04:18 PM

Pessimist

then you can be ecstatic when something good happens

Ninastar 12-02-2010 04:19 PM

half empty.

What sort of battered logic is that?

Are optimists down in the dumps when good stuff happens?

Pessimism and optimism have nothing to do with mood, and everything to do with world view. I know some very happy pessimists and a few optimists who are on the edge of a nervous collapse.

Beastie 12-02-2010 04:23 PM

I am a realist. I do like to look at both the pessimistic view point and optimistic view points but I usually balance the points with the outcome of a realist point of view.

InOne 12-02-2010 04:23 PM

I'm a pessimist by nature, I don't know it's just the way I think.

Stu 12-02-2010 04:24 PM

Come to think of it I'm what you would call a hopeless optimist. I believe in good people and the capacity for humans to do good things - and choose to focus on this - but I still have to maintain the fact that in general people are a bad thing.

Beastie 12-02-2010 04:24 PM

I clicked pessimistic anyways.. erm

Optimist - something turns out good - "yeah"
Optimist - something turns out bad - "**** my life"
Pessimist - something turns out good - "Woohoo"
Pessimist - something turns out bad - "ohh that alright, i expected it"

CaraRawr 12-02-2010 04:27 PM

tbh, pessimist.

What a marvellous psychological analysis.

I cant, because that would involve typecasting two trails of thought and every single person who holds those trails of thought. And that type of generalisation is for idiots.

Even if I were to stoop to your level of rash cognitive judgements you would still be wrong. An optimist is not likely to say '**** my life' if something bad happens, nor is a pessimist more likely to actually rejoice if something good were to happen.

An optimist would think about the good points in a bad situation, not give up hope. A pessimist would always think about the bad points in a good situation.

I'm not really either, I try to see both the good points and the bad points about different situations and decide on how I think it'll turn out when I've figured them all out.
