Red Dead Redemption | Discussion Thread

Red Dead Redemption is a sandbox-style action-adventure western video game developed by Rockstar San Diego, due for release on April 27, 2010 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It is the spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver.

The game is set in 1908; it focuses around a former outlaw, John Marston, who is blackmailed by U.S. Government Agent Edgar Ross to search across the troubled American Frontiers to help bring in the rule of law. It was revealed that Marston has come to kill or capture his former gang members that include his old friend Bill Williamson. Along the way Marston meets a bunch of charismatic characters including Marshal Leigh Johnson and his Deputies, and becomes strong allies with them as he searches for Williamson. As Marston moves through into the Mexican border he encounters a rebel soldier called Abraham Reyes who needs his assistance in a Revolution against the Mexican Army in 1910.

The game will use open world gameplay very similar to the Grand Theft Auto series with sandbox environments and a free-roaming ability. The environments will include frontier towns, prairies, and mountain passes. Realistic horses created with the Euphoria animation engine will play a major part of the game's transport. The game will also feature over 40 different types of animals that can be hunted; these animals include Cattle, Bison, Pigs, Bears, Cougars, Deer, Wolves, Coyotes, Vultures and many more.

The game will be developed using the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine used by Grand Theft Auto IV.

The game sure looks brilliant, and for those of you who loved the GTA Series you will love this as its basically a Wild Western Version of the Grand Theft Auto Series.

Red Dead Redemption has received outstanding reviews and its the game everyone is talking about now.

Go buy it.

I've been looking forward to this for ages. Hope it lives up to the hype.

Pukka! Rockstar will not let us down..

BB_Eye 07-03-2010 04:06 PM

This one is on my radar actually. I'm sure it will be much better than Ubisoft's attempts at a cowboy game.

andyman 07-03-2010 04:11 PM

It will.. Trust me it will.. :)

GTA in the wild west.. Without cars.

Another sandbox game out soon (ETA March 31st) is Just Cause 2.. 2 videos posted in the Games you want in 2010 thread.

I got it today. So slick. Haven't really gotten stuck into it yet, but it's just beautiful to look at.

setanta 23-05-2010 09:22 PM

Oh, Red Dead is class. I feel like Clint Eastwood!

Stu 23-05-2010 09:27 PM

One of the first games on my list when I get my 360 back [I say my, I sold mine and now I need to buy another].

setanta 23-05-2010 09:29 PM

It's great fun, but I suppose it helps that I love Westerns too.

Aye, it's a pure ambiance game for me. I want a western to run around in. I'm not expecting any revolutionary gameplay.

Oh, the gameplay and plot are solid, but it's the enviroment that's truly amazing. So many things to see and do, and a whole host of great characters to meet along the way. Plus there's loadsa references to all the truly iconic moments in Western cinema. Even the music is killer.

I didn't know you played games, don't think I heard you talk about them before.

Out of interest, what are your top 3 or 4 games ever?

setanta 23-05-2010 09:39 PM

I honestly don't play so much Stu. Only the odd one that tickles my fancy so I wouldn't be the right man to ask for a top 5. Having said that, I really enjoyed the last Batman game... Arkham Asylum... is that what it's called?

That's the one.

Have yet to play it. To be honest, I'm a bit behind on the latest generation of games. I chart better graphics and growing movie like presentation as coinciding with a lack of imagination in games. Rather the old days myself, when games were games, not movies.

Well, on that note, I'd say my fav ever is still Super Mariokart for the Snes. Now that was a game.

Anyone care to off a review of Red Dead? I'm a massive GTA fan and with being made by R* I was wondering if it was anything like GTA at all. From what I've seen it looks pretty good, I just need a more in depth review before I part with the £40 I haven't got!

Boothy 27-05-2010 06:16 PM

Oh right, sorry, missed the review on the page :D! Still, anyone else who's got it can you please post your opinions!

Enid 27-05-2010 06:16 PM

No PC version. Disappointed.

Photon 27-05-2010 08:19 PM

This game has wonderful glitches.

Ninastar 27-05-2010 08:20 PM

I kinda want to play this game. :blush2:
