Criticising Islam is not racist says Ian McEwan

The Booker Prize winner said those who claimed judging Muslims was "de facto" racism were playing a "poisonous argument".

McEwan, 61, the best-selling author of novels including Amsterdam, Atonement and Saturday, thought many in the left wrongly took this position because they had an anti-Americanism shared with Islamists.

I think he has a point re: the left and the anti-American thing.

Muslims are always screaming that Islam is a universal religion, not just a religion for Arabs, accessible to all of mankind, blah blah blah...and then as soon as someone criticises Islam, the Muslims immediately scream "racist". They're so hypocritical and full of ****.

There are a lot of things I strongly dislike about Islam. We just need to draw the line when it comes to targeting muslims as a community and demonising them. For instance stereotyping them as terrorists and assuming everything about their religion is "poisonous" when in fact there's a lot we could learn from Islam.

Thats very true, my mentally ill RE(in those days) teacher told us Islam was a threat to all civilisation, they intended to either start wars and use weapons of mass destruction, or worse yet if all else failed send over an invasion force of seemingly innocent people who would breed like rabbits and take over the country.

sovietunion01 - I wouldn't believe all the right-wing propaganda you read either.

In a democratic society - any religion is open to criticism - Islam is no different! If they can't handle it - they shouldn't live in a democratic society! SIMPLES!!!

Ditto and painting them out as though they all think the same way ...People interpret religion in different ways depending on the kind of person they are and their political motivations and such, most religious people are peaceful, good people, some arent, same in any religion.

Its not the criticising Islam that people (non muslims and muslims) dont like its the generalising and assumptions that they all think the same way and interpret their religion in the same way...and get the likes of Abu Hamza mixed up with ordinary muslims

I agree with Netto and BBEye, Not all Christians, Hindus, Jews ETC approach their religion in the same way and it's the same for Muslims. The media's to blame for a lot of the hate really, they've demonised the religion to create moral panics and outrages. If there's a big attack tommorow with people from a certain religion or country then that country/religion would be demonised as a whole the same as Islam has.
