what does xbox live do?

Allows you to download demos, Music and basically get the most out of Xbox.

Nathan was 2-0 up i ended the game with 9 men

You've got two different memberships in it. Silver Membership is free but you can't play games online but you can still download stuff and talk to people while you can play online with a Gold Membership (The one you have to pay for) and can get some downloadable content before those on a Silver membership.

I only tend to buy the 3 month memberships really as I tend to play it a lot and then go off it for a while.
