Bruce Forsyth: "X Factor is embarrassing"

The 82-year-old said he did not consider the ITV programme, the seventh series of which is due to air later this year, entertainment.

“It’s not my cup of tea,” he told the Daily Mirror.

“I haven’t watched an entire show. I can’t hear people singing for two hours, that to me is not entertainment.

“I’m an old variety performer, I want to see a juggler, or something to break it up. I hate seeing people disappointed in public. It can be embarrassing at times.

“Bigger venues and the pyrotechnics made it much more of an event last year. Sometimes it was like a firework display with someone singing to be voted on. The electricity bill must have been enormous.”

Forsyth also claimed he and his fellow comedians had been overlooked for knighthoods because their profession is not deemed a “proper job”.

“Do the people in charge think making millions laugh is less important than being a great actor, sportsman, or pop star? Getting a laugh can be very hard work. It’s so fine-tuned.

“Great comics like Morecambe and Wise, the Two Ronnies, Tommy Cooper and Les Dawson were more than worthy of being knighted. Do those in charge not think we’ve got a proper job?

“Maybe it dates back to jesters in the king and queen’s court when they were treated as buffoons. I’m very happy with my CBE, but if I get a knighthood it would be a great honour.”

And he said he had not decided whether to host another series of Strictly Come Dancing.

“I’ll make up my mind a few months before. I’ll listen to my head and see how I feel.”

On Wednesday, he appears on C4’s Comedy Roast where pal Jonathan Ross jokingly calls him “------- ugly”.

Next week he starts filming the BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are? and will also host the last episode of this series of Have I Got News for You?

He added: “Bruce has been busy. When will I stop? When I can no longer walk on to a studio floor and feel 35. You never know when it’s going to stop. I’m still having fun making people laugh.”

He is entitled to his opinion! And besides - he has a point. The show is more like a firework and pyrotechnic display than a talent show - it has become very false!

Scarlett. 07-04-2010 05:07 PM

Still, it's 100x more intresting than Strictly, and Brucie is way past his time, how old is he now? 200?

Princess 07-04-2010 05:08 PM

He's 82

edit:As it says in the article, lol. Here's being silly about this,TXF>Strictly.

Zippy 07-04-2010 05:16 PM

He was asked about it and gave his opinion..sheesh!

He didn't slag it off just said its not his thing and doesn't like the cutthroat nature of it.

I love Brucie. At 82 he can say whatever he damn well likes.

This thread is just typical of attitudes towards the elderly in this country.

Stacey. 07-04-2010 05:18 PM

Brucie is a legend.
but The X Factors amazing :nono:

Singing?! When did The X Factor become a show about singing?

Stu 07-04-2010 06:29 PM

He is entitled to his opinion. Stop bringing his age into it. And it's not because he is bitter. Jesus christ. Where did you drag that tired assumption from, Beast?

Enid 07-04-2010 06:54 PM

He is such a sweet man.

"I hate seeing people disappointed in public. It can be embarrassing at times" =/= "X Factor is embarrassing"

Ruth*Star 07-04-2010 07:32 PM

He's entitled to his opinion, Strictly's not my "cup of tea". I prefer the X factor.

I like Ice dancing shows though.

Shasown 07-04-2010 10:22 PM

Of course he is entitled to his opinion, and I have a lot of respect for the man, I just dont find him humerous, or rather I should say I dont find his scriptwriters humerous, all his lines are read off autocue.

In years gone by, he was very entertaining, multi talented and a complete one man show, he has also done some phenomenal work for charity and I do agree with his view about knighthoods and comedians. But I do feel he should retire gracefully.

Of course parts of the X factor are embarrassing that is no doubt part of the attraction in the initial programs of a series for a lot of people. Unfortunately its what TV executives and the shows have decided we will have as mainstream entertainment. But when all is said and done the show is primarily a singing competition.

Scarlett. 07-04-2010 10:54 PM

I shouldnt have dragged up his age, you're right, I have no problem with old people on tv , I just dont like the guy though, regardless of how old he is

setanta 08-04-2010 06:00 AM

Diss XFactor - Check (although he does have a point about the fireworks and spectacle overpowering the performers - the sound on last years show was absolutely terrible)
Mention his name among real comedy legends - Check
Mention Knighthood but be sure to note that he's perfectly happy with an OBE- Check
After his less than subtle attempts at further cementing his reputation among the true great British TV icons be sure to add that he may be leaving our television sets very shortly, thereby highlighting what a great ambassador and sad loss he'd be - Check

Yes, I'm a cynic.

Possiblehousemate 08-04-2010 06:32 AM

He makes me cringe!

I think its his chin or somethin...
