Nice Teacher vs. Strict Teacher

Do you think a lesson is more affective if the teacher is nice, or strict? I remember a discussion on this on the radio about a year ago. Is teaching more affective if you have a "nice" teacher, a teacher who is your "friend" or a teacher who is simply informative and strict?
Personally, I think having a nice teacher is far more effective than having a not so nice one. If you don't understand, you feel more comfortable asking. Also, when you have a nice teacher you tend to look forward to the lesson in question more, and I suppose you are more likely to listen if you like the teacher. But, a strict teacher is arguable too, if you listen then you won't need to ask questions.
Some people believe that teachers are there simply to teach, not to befriend.
What do you think?

The best is a Nice Teacher
that can become Strict when needed.

Winner.

You need a teacher who you can relate to, but teachers and pupils need to establish boundaries that both of them don't cross. An unspoken understanding if you will, some teachers can do it some can't, and it's all on different levels. All depends on the teachers personality really.

You need strict teachers in senior schools...kids walk all over the 'nice' ones.

Little chavs have no respect, they wont listen to someone who is nice. Have to show off infront of their mates.

I agree, even though I am a teenager, I have respect for adults.

As Arista says, a fine balance is needed. Too nice, and some could exploit that fact. Too strict, and alienation can occurr.

Agree - an ability to relate to pupils - in conjunction with the ability to take control and take no nonsense from the idiotic ones - is a pre-requiste to being a good teacher!

Having said that though - with ever increasing amounts of pupils and less and less people interested in training as teachers - maybe we will reach the point where we are in no position to be too choosy about that! I guess we can't have it all ways - we need a good environment for teachers to work in to attract the teachers we need!

definitely nice teachers. my Science teacher is epic, i only ever 'try hard' when i have her, and i feel i can ask her any questions :) i also look forward to her lessons :D

MrGaryy 28-04-2010 05:55 PM

you need a healthy balance. I remember trainee teachers coming in to my school, young and friendly and God to think of the hard time we gave them, I almost feel bad. They just had no authority and when they did lay down the law it was a complete joke to us because they just seemed crazy.

Personally I learn better from someone who is 'strict'. I mean there's a half way point, where they're understanding of mistakes of what not but ultimately need to get their work done and don't let you get in the way.

I do feel that sometimes strict teachers are not always the best thing forward. Our science teacher is way too strict and makes the lessons very uneasy which makes me dread the lessons alot.

Patrick 28-04-2010 05:58 PM

You need a legend and a entertaining teacher.

I get along with both but usually mess about when the teacher is too nice.
We have a strict H.E Teacher and everyone is scare of her, However were good friends and that so its good.

I personally think that you need to have a teacher that you can speak to normally. My RE teacher is the best in the school. She doesn't speak down on you.. she speaks with you and has a laugh with all of us. She is very good at controlling the class because of her humour and people hang off of the end of her every word. We have discussions about all sorts.. condoms.. and she is hilarious. Teachers need to be able to emphasise with students and know what they want. I personally want to be a teacher when I am older and I am definitely going to use her style of teaching because the whole school loves her and respects her.. because she respects us as individuals and people.

This tbh.

I have 2 different fave teachers, both for different reasons.

I like my P.E teacher cause she is really nice and I feel like I could talk to her about anything. I think one of my friends is getting a bit to close to her though... :/

and I like my other teacher because she is a good teacher. She is the one who has gotten me the best results in anything. She is strict but she is nice at the same time. Alot of people hate her though, but they are the ones who give her crap all the time.

We learn a lot in her lessons aswell..
She won UK teacher of the year award a few years back. She's awesome.

Nice ones who aren't pushovers. In my school our History teacher was lovely and she was an amazing teacher so no-one ever gave her any trouble. But the Maths teacher was an absolute bitch and not that great at teaching so no-one gave her any respect at all. It's a balance.

MrGaryy 28-04-2010 06:06 PM

Ultimately you'll learn better from someone who isn't there having a chat for half the class, letting the class mess about, ect. It will be a more enjoyable class but you are going to learn more from the teacher whose class you won;t talk in because you know you'll get in trouble and the teacher whom you always do your homework for because you know you'll get in **** otherwise.

I think teachers who your respect are best
For teachers to get that respect they have to be nice, able to be less in that teacher role and relaxed but also they need to have some strictness so when they set work people do it.
All my best teachers have had that right balance. I think the balance is hard to get.

Untrue not with all, i had some proper "chav's" in my class real bad always playing up.

We had a nice teacher, that could take control at the same time, they behaved better in that class than any other.

There needs to be a bit of both, if your a ******* to your students then you wont get and respect.
If your too nice they will walk all over you, you have to find the middle ground.
