Film Remakes....

In most cases my experience pf a remake is that it is not as good as the original.

Any exceptions?

One exception for me would be The remake of The Thomas Crown Affair with Pierce Brosnan which I thought was better than the original, despite it starring Steve McQueen!

BB_Eye 12-05-2010 01:18 PM

John Carpenter's the Thing
Vanilla Sky (a remake of the Spanish movie Open your Eyes)
Nosferatu (1970's version)
The Man Who Knew Too Much (conveniently remade by the same director, lol)

Other than that, yeah, most of them a pretty bad. The remake of Black Christmas was entertaining for all the wrong reasons though. Ditto Halloween. I used to think Insomnia with Al Pacino was a good remake, but have changed my mind. The original pisses over it.

I think a lot of movies are better..
When remade.

Miracle on 34th street would be one of them..

A lot of stuff from sort of 1940 - 1950
when its remade usually is more entertaining for me.

BB_Eye 12-05-2010 01:22 PM

Oops, almost forgot. Both remakes of King Kong were really quite good.

Niamh. 12-05-2010 01:23 PM

most of the remakes I've seen I haven't seen the original, so I can't think of any really.

I have to say I was utterly disappointed with Charlie and the Chocolate factory

Cape Fear was an excellent remake. Also I think The Departed is pretty much a remake sprinkled with a bit of Irish. Also Scarface

Most are crap but there's quite a few exceptions, my personal favourites being The Fly, The Thing, Scarface, 3.10 to Yuma, Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Dawn of the Dead's one, I struggle with thinking of good remakes as most I remember tend to be subpar horror remakes.

Oh, Friday the 13th was on par with the original although that's not saying much really.

I love the fly and dirty rotten scoundrels but I've never seen the originals so can't compare!

The original Fly is fairly hammy stuff, but still fun in it's own way. Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is very close in narrative to a film made by Brando and Niven called Bedtime Story.

Did anyone see the Psycho remake with Vince Vaughn? That was woeful.

Yeah :p

I got creeped out when he was looking through the hole in the wall wanking over her, when she was having a shower :p

It was such a terrible remake IMO.

i heard the a nightmare on elm street remake is just as good as original?? then again i havent seen either.

Ross 12-05-2010 06:15 PM

Friday the 13th was awesome! I've yet to see Nightmare on Elm Street, I'll let you know.

IheartBB 12-05-2010 06:53 PM

All the main ones have been said.
Quarantine was a decent remake of [rec], but not as good.
Cloverfield was pretty much a modern day take on the 50's sci-fi Beast From 20,000 Fathoms, although not official.
Oh and the remake of The Crazies was far better than Romero's original, but it really didn't have much to live up to.

It's rubbish. The less said about it the better.

In my view Night of the Living Dead the 1990 version is much better than the orignal, but thats my view.

The Ring was a decent remake of Ringu

Cant think of any other
