'Charlie Condom' promotes condoms to 13-year-olds

A new children’s character, Charlie Condom, has been created by health chiefs in Southampton to promote condoms to 13-year-olds.

Education leaders have slammed the move and others call it “ridiculous”.

The character is promoting a scheme, designed to cut the number of teenage pregnancies, which will allow youngsters to collect the contraceptives using a condom credit-card from 18 venues in the city.

Rather than tackle the harder option, ie to teach children that sex is not an option when you are 13 this lot have just opted for the easy option and have given in to the minority.

what do you make of this giant johnny?

Stu 19-05-2010 09:49 AM

Well, for better or worse sex is an option at 13. It's silly, yeah, but the cats out of the bag now and if a 13 year old is going to have sex, nobody is going to stop him or her, so you may as well promote safety.

This.
A 13 year old asked me if i had a condom the other day for him and his girlfriend to use, now i dunno if he was being honest but the fact is rather then be safe then becoming preggers at such a young age!!

Stu 19-05-2010 09:54 AM

Mind you this is from the bloke who believes it should be a criminal offence for two 18, 19 or 20 year olds to have sex with one another.

Coz' when everyone hits 21, a special hormone is released in the brain which gives one greater knowledge and understanding of sex.

For any decent parent it is not an option. if your feral child is left to hang around fecklessly, drink, stay out overnight unsupervised then yes

This luckily is not the case for most children with good parents

You should have informed his parents so that he can learn that it is a very bad thing to do. 13 years olds need education and direction.

That makes no sense whatsoever. So any sex under 21 is a misinformed choice brought on by excess alcohol consumption and irrationality?

Niamh. 19-05-2010 10:03 AM

My daughter will be 13 in 3 years, that's a scary thought.

aaww, thanks but yeah, I'd like to think that she wouldn't have the opportunity to be having sex at that age and hope that she wouldn't even be thinking about it yet, that's so young

Statistics were never your strong point.

I assume the demographic of 21> is only 1% misinformed sex, then.

How would teaching children at that age that sex is not an option be any more beneficial than teaching safe sex?

I know it's not the case with all children, but once you tell a child/teenager something is forbidden, there will always be a few, if not a lot of them that will go and do it. As Stu said, whether you like it or not, there will be children doing it, no matter how much you try and teach them that it is not an option.

The sensible kids that age won't have sex then anyway, therefore educating the ones that will go and have sex about safe sex is the only option imo.

The Tories are in power, 3D is "cool" and now "Charlie says..." is back with a vengeance.

I'm pretty sure that if I were old enough to remember the 80's, I would have gotten sick of it the first time around.
