Big Bro's Jade arrested in Asda theft probe

04/10/2005 - 12:02:57 AM

Big Brother star Jade Goody has been arrested and questioned by police on suspicion of shoplifting at her local Asda supermarket, it emerged tonight.

Millionairess Goody denied any wrongdoing and was released without charge by Essex Police. No further investigation will take place.

A security tag still attached to a £16 denim waistcoat set off an alarm when she tried to leave the store in Harlow after her weekly shop, The Sun reported.

The 24-year-old mother of two allegedly told customer service staff she had left the receipt for the military-style jacket at one of the tills and was let go, taking it with her, the newspaper said.

But the receipt was never found and no one could remember her buying any clothes, The Sun said, prompting the store to call the police.

Insp Adrian Dearsley said: “Police received a report at 2.50 on Sunday afternoon of a theft of an item of clothing from Asda’s in Harlow.

“This evening a 24-year-old woman from Chipping Ongar was arrested on suspicion of theft.

“The investigation has run its course and there will be no charge out of it.”

He did not know whether Goody had gone to a police station voluntarily or been arrested at home.

A spokeswoman for the star, who came fourth in BB3, told The Sun: “She denies she has done anything wrong. She thought Asda staff made the mistake by accidentally leaving the tag on the jacket.”

Blimey, that's a bit embarrassing for her. I bet it was all just a mistake though, in the Richard Madeley vein.

No apology from Asda, apparently.

Jade ... suspected of shoplifting

JADE Goody will be getting NO apology from Asda after her arrest for suspected shoplifting, store chiefs declared last night.

They told how security cameras had tracked the Big Brother star — who left without paying for a size 16 denim waistcoat.

But they insisted she WOULD be welcome to shop there again.

A spokesman said: “CCTV followed her because they knew she was famous.

“They saw her pick up various items and put them in her basket. Then she went to checkout 19 and the waistcoat stayed over her arm.

“She did not pay for it. The checkout assistant assumed it was her waistcoat because it was not offered for payment.

“She paid for all the other items and when she left the store the alarm went off.”

Not a waist ... Jade wears 'stolen' item

Jade was hauled back inside and spurned a SECOND chance to pay for the item.

She said she had already done so and asked staff to remove its security tag.

They did — and she was allowed to leave the store in Harlow, Essex.

But Asda later alerted police, who contacted the former dental nurse.

Jade, 24, was arrested and quizzed for three hours after going to the police station.

She was eventually freed without charge.

The “George” waistcoat was returned to Asda — who said it had reviewed the CCTV, pored over receipts and checked Jade’s debit card transaction.

The store said: “We sold two size 14s that day. No size 16 was paid for.”

But the spokesman added: “Now that the stylish item has been returned, she’s not a ‘big bother’ with us. Whilst not apologising, we would like to make it clear there are no hard feelings.”

Mum-of-two Jade said at her home in Chipping Ongar yesterday: “I won’t be going back.”

Declaring her innocence she said: “I have two houses and four cars. Why would I steal a £16 jacket?”

A spokesman for the star, who is currently running a beauty parlour for her Jade’s Salon show on Living TV, claimed two shopping centres had now banned her.

The aide said: “She also had a client at her salon cancel on her.

“Quite rightly she feels like an innocent victim in all this.”

ASDA is hiring an extra 300 security staff in the run-up to Christmas.

I still think it was a mistake - I nearly accidentally walked out of a supermarket with a bunch of bananas I hadn't paid for once!

But on another note, in the top picture in that article, she does look like she might be pregnant.

Not that I like her, but I do back her. Why would she nick something from ASDA when she has £2m in the bank?:conf:
