Are you a film buff or do you just love films.

I used to think I was a film buff until I discovered most film buffs are obsessive and hyper critical about films. They treat them like their children and not the children they love but the children they push, shove and drive to achieve things.

Since I generally like most films I see and have only really been disappointed with a handful... I guess I am more a film fan than a film buff.

What are you? Do you obsess over films like a scary nutcase or do you just enjoy them and find you have little opinion about them.

I love films, but certain types of films. Love big action movies like 2012 and armagedon, for the special effects. Old black and whites are a favourite too, love the Marx brothers and I will watch anything with John Cusack. I prostitute my vision!

I wouldn't call myself a film buff as I no longer regularly visit my local arthouse cinema like I did in my teens... in fact I have barely gone out to see a movie at all in the last few years.

In terms of my attitude, well that it probably part of the reason. I've found myself disappointed with such an insane amount of movies in recent times that my interest has simply waned and the paying public seem to be getting less and less discriminating in their tastes. What's worse is that awards ceremonies and critics show a great deal of apathy in the matter also.

In this sorry situation, a movie producer is going to think why value the build-up of suspense and character development when people will lap up whatever you put infront of the as long as there are plenty of flashing lights and colours? Why have believable characters and convincing performances when you can dress an otherwise trite story in artifice and give something the appearance of being more profound than it actually is?

I love films and I'd watch most types. But I don't know enough about them to be a buff.

bansheewails 08-06-2010 08:48 PM

A film buff could probably tell you the name of the director where it was filmed and the colour of the stuntmans under pants! I enjoy films as a bit of escapism thats all. I can quote a few lines from my favourites tho!

I'd say I know a lot of films and a lot about films and have seen tonnes and tonnes of them but I think a buff is somebody who obsesses over them a little too much.

No and I say No because I can do that but I wouldn't call myself a buff. Buffs are just OTT in terms of films. We all love films but buffs take it too far and treat them like a wife and not a well kept one either.

Eh? Wrong thread.

Honestly i just enjoy films, when we are laying in bed cuddled up watching a good movie there is little that tops that..

there is so many films people have told me are crap but i still like them..

Daredevil, was told it was complete ****. i loved it.
Shooter, told it was a very average movie and it is one of my best movies.
Crank 2, told it was crap, and although it has some silly cartoon bit..its great.

Exactly this.

I'm rarely disappointed with films. Some have annoyed me but I think if I gave films a good watch in the right mood - I'd still like it.

I really dislike when people read to much into reviews my mate always does, hears one bad review and says its gunna be ****.

Really annoys me as its all about opinion..If it sounds good to you chances are,you will like it.

setanta 08-06-2010 10:35 PM

Yeah, I'd be a bit of a buff when it concerns movies, but it doesn't stop me from loving flicks that get bad write ups.

I mean, I thought the last Rambo was fantastic stuff, and some of the comedies that critics frown at have me in tears.

bansheewails 08-06-2010 10:38 PM

One of my favourite films is independence day. I enjoyed it for what it was, the presidents speech in it has to be worse than anything George Bushs team ever came up with, but it was a hoot. I just go with the flow. :)

I think over time you just start to appreciate the work that goes into making them. It's all up there for you to see.

I remember loving it when it came out. I would still watch it if it was on TV again to be honest.

Sure I've noticed through my reading that there's quite a few notable critics who have changed their minds over time about particular films. Just shows you that they don't always know what they're talking about.
