HMs talking in code- "Pasta"

Govan and Keeva were having a conversation yesterday and kept saying "Do you like pasta?" and then they kept going on about how much they dont trust "pasta"... seems like they have been talking about Mario.

Im Italian and get called Pasta and Pizza all the time :D but do you think that some people will get insulted? its kind of the same thing as using code for saying "curry" or "poppadum" for an Indian person in the house. But if that did happen, they would be kicked out for racism

Well anyways, im not sure if they got punished, Im sure they did, or they got warned.

They got told to stop talking in code, because Shabby and Caohime were doing the same on live feed later on and got called to the diary room.

Why did they have to talk in code? its not like its about noms & Yeah i agree if they where given a code name of 'poppadom' to an indian housemate everyone would complain it'd be racist :bored:

Well would it be racist if they called an English person Fish & Chips? Or an Irish person Guinness? Or whatever, it's silly to think of it as racism.

I know, Im saying im not offended when people say "pasta" to me, just as my friends not offended when they say "go eat some fajitas" to her. But some people might be.

And yeah as CBB5 proved, saying poppadum is HORRIFIC!

And that was just pathetic...to be honest. I will never say the word poppadum again :bored:

Last year, I started loving Marcus precisely because of what he said to BB about the pathetic double standards of their "racism"...

The point is though, they wouldn't say that about an English person because the majority in the house (and the country) are Engish, which is just about "people like me".

It's those who are the evident minority who are given disrespectful nicjnames based on their culture or background. So yes; Pasta, Poppadom, Haggis, Jock, Paddy, Taffy etc are all uneccesary and insulting terms to use about other minorities.

If an English person was living say, in Asia, they would very quickly become angry if locals constantly refered to them as Baigui (white Ghost).

The reason for "political correctness" is often overlooked. Britain has a tradition of being disrespectful towards minorities and if such people have to be "educated" to stop being ignorant and intolerant, then I'm all for it.

In saying that, I don't believe BB will respond as they should, if say a term like Black beans and rice had being used as a reference to Govan. BB like so many other institutions are themselves more concerned with the impact racism has in their show than the offense caused to the individual concerned. Their record over the past 10 years shows this quite clearly.

Racism is Racism irrespective of whether you are a minority or majority.

Being called Shilpa Popadom was offensive in the context it was meant.

I dont think though that exchanging Pasta for Mario is meant as Racism and shouldnt be regarded as such. It is breaking the rules though and BB has shown once again it turns a blind eye to its favs.

Poppadum is a racist word there is no doubt. I'm not sure about Pasta, but it is a pretty stupid stereotype, I guess it could be seen as offensive.

Are you surprised that they ignore that, It wasn't the last time they did it.

ROFL I remember I was on Holiday in 2008, got back in the early hours of the morning and the first thing I did was head straight to 4oD to watch the weeks Big Brother.

I was so intrested in hearing why Stu was stripped of his H.O.H title, and why half the house was up for eviction LOL

I had seen it in the Daily Star, and then I watched it on 4oD and it turned out they were all talking about nominations using Football Codes LOL

Love it.

Patrick 23-06-2010 07:29 PM

I never even knew what a Poppadum was I heard it on CBB5 but then I went to my mates house and he was like 'Oh do you want a Poppadum with that curry?' and I was like  I thought he was being racist but I didn't even know it was like a food :joker:

I'm never going to think of a Poppadum as a tasty food ever, since Jade said it.

Is this you Patrick?

StGeorge 23-06-2010 07:40 PM

Popadom is not racist FFS....but if used in the context it was for Shilpa, then it can be deemed as such.
If they used the term Mario Maccaroni, then that to could be seen as a racially motivated description and so deemed offensive.

Daft i know, but thats PC for you.

Mystrios 23-06-2010 08:33 PM

They should be punished...

It was blatent they where talking about Nominations Concerning Mario
