You're wasting your time, they don't really want to know or they'd have paid attention in History class.

Oooo_get_her 01-07-2010 06:29 PM

Dear Lord!! you people are (bar fingers) just not out there, are you?

June 17th 1972 5 men broke into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex in Washington DC. A scandal ensued when it was discovered these men worked for the Republicans and the scandal was known as the Watergate affair.

Since then many US political scandals have been given the affix -gate. Irangate, White Watergate, etc..

EDIT: OK - so others got there while I was typing.... but seriously, to the folks who don;t know, you are sitting at a computer - just Google it!!

victimgate! :joker:

BB_Eye 01-07-2010 06:29 PM

It's taken from the Watergate scandal.

The first use of it in Big Brother that I can remember is "Watergate" in BB7 when Grace chucked water over Suzie during her eviction.

I took GCSE History and we aren't being taught about watergate. Not always the person's fault for not knowing about something.

Fu*ck me. Do any of you go to school. As vesavious pointed out is has to do with the Watergate scandal of the mid 70' where President Nixon was complicit in a break in done by his supporters to try and dig up dirt on the other party. When the investigation ensued it seemed that senior figures in his party were aware if not complicit of these illegal activities. This reflected very badly on the then President.

The scandal broke and Nixon was forced to resign as president. Since then any major scandal gets the word gate added to in reference to the scandal.

There more to it but thats it in a nutshell. Find out more at the various links supplied. Not that you all will, of course, in stead of using the internet for educational purposes you'd all rather spam garbage on here.

hehe, thanks :) I know, so many people on forums moan at a question being asked, heck, that's what forums are for lol...If pilots never asked questions to Refresh themselves, they'd be falling out of the sky
