I never look at people who I don't know. Always turns very awkward lol

That might attract unwanted attention, I wouldn't do that. And I don't really make eye contact with people I don't know.

I smile at everyone. Costs nothing. One reason I'd never live in London. Miserable buggers with their heads down

what if they smile at you first?

I would think that are probably laughing at me on the inside, but they don't want to seem rude. Or they want something from me. Either way I wouldn't smile back, and I' try get away from them. If it was on a bus or train, I'd just ignore them and read my book and try stay calm.

I normally get scowled at if I smile at someone in the street or wherever, which is why I've come to just staring at the floor and avoiding eye contact whilst I go around

Not all, but a huge majority of people suck and are very judgemental in my experience.
