It shows how thick she is. Apart from Eddie Van Halen or Jimi Hendrix, everyone who can actually play guitar learnt it from being crap at it.

Kids these days want everything on a plate and that's why the music scene is dead. If I can't play it within one month then I must be s**t at it. Instead of believing in yourself that you can play it.

What a ledgend :joker::joker:

I can actually play guitar and as with the guitarist and the look he gave her, summed her up. Some people listen to music, others play music. :D

How is life so cruel to me? Am I talking about my weight all the time and how I would never be looked at or even talked to by a good looking Australian man?

Sometimes life is transparant but not for the naive.
:D

Nothing really but more belief in what she can do instead of negativity. If most of the kids today picked up a guitar instead of a Xbox or Playstation then they would find out they have talent. Too much work I know but there's always hope. :)

Playstation is good and so is Xbox but trust me the feeling of listening to a song for the early stages of your life and then being able to play it note for note is beyond belief. Nevermind being able to go up on stage and play the song.

All I am saying is I do not find anything remotely funny about some woman who has a defeatist attitude regarding something she sets about trying to learn.

If we all did that then we should just pull the plug on life itself. Around 97% of musicians are terrible when we start out. That's the beauty of it, the more you practice the more you learn.

Some say things like 'Guitar Hero' actually hurt whatever 'future guitar players' may have arisen.
A young kid wants to be a rock star but picks up the simple (but maybe faster) video game and it allows them to 'feel' like they have accomplishment and have 'mastered' guitar, rock, songs.
But it was 'artificial' and those 100's of hours of practice go nowhere outside of the game,
but,
they may even have trained themselves to where actual guitar playing becomes more difficult.

I don't know about that (never played guitar hero) but I can tell you it turns out learning to play guitar is difficult and really is.. practice practice practice and for probably hundreds of hours.

Some of the youth I know do seem to pick it up fast but then again they often just practice for the specific songs their band plays only (nothing wrong with that either),
but,
yeah, pretty much everyone will suck and suck badly for fairly long time heh

wow i never imagined this thread getting so deep

actually record companies see talent in musicians thats why they have to practice more and get better.

Hmm.
i suppose that might depend on what exactly they think 'talent' means. Attitude and enthusiasm and 'vision' can count for a lot when you look at a (possible) successful musician.
You might invest in an Elvis who was not exactly a great musician but was a big personality.
You might invest in a band who is 'not yet' that good at playing their instrument but you can see they will be. They are 'determined to it' and will practice.

But Gladwell does seem to have this right in 'Outliers' - Musicians are made from practice and not inherent talent.

I once had a neighbour who's song you absolutely have heard (even if your a kid now),
and,
you will see him at 'legends of rock' concerts or in 'rock halls of fame' etc.
In a recent interview he was asked where and how his most popular hit song came from.
He explained - "5000 hours of practice. We were a house band working night after night. We played and improved and kept repeating variations until one night everyone approved".
(im paraphrasing a little).
Oh.. yes, he will tell anyone he (and all of them) were TERRIBLE when they started playing.
That's not 'false humility' but he just blatantly explains they SUCKED and did for years.
By the time they exploded into the rock universe and were 'overnight successes' they had actually been playing together for thousands and thousands of hours.
