I\'m off sick ..

I'm off sick at the moment with a damaged knee ligament, i've used up all my company sick pay ( 6 weeks), and I'm now getting SSP which i believe to be only £68 a week. I want to claim housing benefit, and Counil tax relief. But i have some savings. .. Do i have to use up all my savings to pay my rent before i can claim benefit??? Can anyone clear this up for me? Cheers.

..And i should add, It would really erk me immensly if i had to use all my savings to pay off my rent. I've thought about taking all my savings out and hiding the cash under my matress, but knowing the Benefit Office they would track it down and refuse me any money.
WHY OH WHY SHOULD I USE MY HARD EARNED SAVINGS TO PAY OFF MY RENT, WHEN HALF THE COUNTRY ARE GETTING BENEFITS THERE NOT ENTITLED TO!!!

You don't have to use up all your savings, if they are less than £3000 I believe. Ask at your local DWP for advice, but I should think you will be able to get the benefits for the time you are off. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for that Stropz! my girlfriend is adamant that i am not allowed ANY savings whatsoever, but i think you are correct.

ps, if its more than £3000 ( which it is) could i put some of the cash into another account with the same bank, without them finding my hard earned stash. ( i was looking at visiting my brother in New Zealand next year with most of the money) .. "just figgured you wanted to know" -famous line from Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.

I had suspected you were a bloke one other time I was reading your posts, but didn't like to ask. Then when you mentioned your GF, I figured you were either a guy or a girl of the gay persuasion.
