Why does Ulrika always 'talk down' to people?

I know she's older than the rest and probably sees herself as the 'mother' figure but even though she has young kids herself there is no need to be condescending and talk down to people like they were kids themselves. I noticed this when she was reading out the task, pronunciating every word and talking slowly like they were a bunch of kids or idiots. I would find this extremely offensive. Also when everybody is talking and she is trying to say something I've noticed that she raises her voice until she's heard instead of waiting to speak.
Its no excuse that she's a mum etc cos I've never talked down to my kids, whatever their ages

Conzors 02-09-2010 06:51 AM

i dont think she does.

luminoussun 02-09-2010 07:02 AM

I honestly think she is above them all...she is getting paid more and she won the CELEB version...automatically placing her higher then the NORMAL winners.

Plus she ****ed sven and was on gmtv every day for a while and most impressively of all she presented gladiators.

Chuckyegg 02-09-2010 08:34 AM

She is kind of above them in many ways. once you get past 35, you start losing some of that self obsession and it can get tiring to be around younger people sometimes.

Perhaps if she saw it less as a negative and a pain in the a*se like she was above and better than them and saw it more of a positive, an opportunity to be around young people and understand their points of view, where they are coming from and understand them a bit more, she would actually enjoy the experience more.
Her kids will be young adults one day who shouldn't be dismissed because she's older and thinks she's superior, she will find that she has to learn from them and understand their world.
Also you could say that Jermaine Jackson was 'above' the others in some ways yet he didn't appear to look down on the or always seem as though he should be heard above the rest. Its not a question of pecking order just the fact that we are all equal and I dont like the 'superior' attitude

Chuckyegg 02-09-2010 09:01 AM

True. She's in it for the cash.

Some of the Hm's are not very erm........... bright, so she probably needed to talk slowly and clear for them.

It's hard not to be condescending sometimes. Depending on the company you're in.

You missed the point of my post - I was pointing out that if I type in capitals it doesn't make the content any more or less understandable i.e. if the HM's are not that bright as you say then talking slowly, raising you voice above others does not make what your trying to say any more understandable and is often done only to condescend and nothing more. Its like shouting at a blind person and thinking that would make them understand you better

Sorry, I dont agree, her talking slowly and clearly does help those that are not too clever. Shouting doesn't however.

Awwwwww Noooooooo not forever, just a difference of opinion on this, thats ok.
Its just I have a employee who is lovely but not bright, if I talk normally, she looks at me gone out, if I talk to her slowly and clearly , she gets it, most the time anyway and she appreciates the time I give her to do this.
Its only bright people that would find it condescending IMO.

Rhino - did you get out the wrong side of the bed today? I noticed Ulrika enunciating the words of the hand-out as she read and I enjoyed listening to her. So many people mumble and can't be heard properly nowadays I think it's nice when somebody makes sure they are heard first time, not having to be asked to repeat themselves.

Stacey. 02-09-2010 10:16 AM

She's just older and maybe see's herself more important or something? I dunno but I like her anyway.

I don't discuss my bedroom 'sides' on this forum thankyou - I understand what you are saying but Ulrika does it a lot I have noticed, not specifically in reading instructions but just in general conversations

CaudleHalbard 02-09-2010 11:41 AM

Ulrika is only a year older than Nick. I doubt it's anything to do with age.

Mind you she does look quite a bit older than her actual age - maybe she's bitter about it? ;)

That is a point - she may be resentful towards the younger attractive females in the house - she was very attractive herself when younger and some females find it hard to let go of that - especially if she does still get a lot of attention from her peers

monx 02-09-2010 11:54 AM

Despite her explaining the rules slowly and clearly, Nikki still didnt understand! :elephant:

That aside, teachers tend to aim their lesson to the slowest in the class in order for all to understand the lesson, in my opinion this is what Ulrika does.

Yes but she's not a teacher and they're not children - so don't treat them as such

CaudleHalbard 02-09-2010 12:00 PM

Nikki likes to be perceived as a child! ;)
