Big Brother: Gone Too Soon

Damn, I only started watching a year ago and now it's ripped out of my hands. At least you all had 10 years to cherish it!

It's really a shame C4 was so intent of getting rid of Big Brother as they really could have made it work if they tried. I hope one day they will realize they made a mistake by letting go of this amazing show.

I personally thing it could have gone on for many more years to come, I still saw glimpse of life in it. They could have ended it after Big Brother 4. Everyone then thought the show was dead and there was no more use. But the producers reinvented the show and Big Brother 5 became the highest rated series ever. But as the years went on, every year was the same and they didn't reinvent itself enough when the show was beginning to die like it did in BB4. After BB10, they could have saved the show but they decided to just throw the towel in unfortunetly.

All of you that claim you are glad the show is ending will be taking it back 4 months from now.

At least I still have 5 series to watch + more celebrity series! Yay for me~

It just doesn't feel right for it to be ending tbh :/

Same here, even though its just a tv show its still pretty upsetting :( Really hope C5 can breath some life into it.

Yes, I think you may try to see where your first sentence 'explains a lot' and even answers some of your own 'questions' about it ending.

Most have been through 11 seasons and more counting the CBB (or TBB or whatever),
and,
So for most viewers its been plenty to be as fully saturated and see all the possible twists and turns before it lost its novelty and became less intriguing.

Now there are a lot of hardcore fans on this forum so not quite the same but even I admit it may be time.

Yes, for you its a new thing, a new discovery and that is awesome,
but,
there aren't so many first-time or new viewers to make up for the 'seen-it-all' regular viewers turning it off or actually just 'less intrigued'

No, I don't think they were intent on getting rid of it in any dismissive or 'negative' way.
They spend a lot of time studying the trends and ratings and projections etc and they just realized that they would be better spending their time and money on something new.

Really, this was obvious in BB9's season. BB9 was absolutely brilliant, extremely well produced.
I think it was their 'masterpiece' and it had many unique, clever, novel tasks, ideas, combination of characters, etc
YET
....to my surprise ratings were still rapidly declining on that season!

They did try to blow up into crazy Jeremy Kyle (or Jerry Springer) with BB10, blew away all kinds of rules,
threw in whatever gimmicks they could think of and not only was it an ugly season but ratings again... down and down.

So this isn't really in doubt. It's not a real question so much as simply what happens.
They do need to make money. Its business.

I'm not sure who is 'glad' but some here do understand when something has gone as far as possible.
It's better to go out now than let it wither and die a slow ugly death.

Well see.. that's what DVD box sets are for. So you aren't cheated out of anything.
The strange thing is you seem well aware of the seasons, which seasons did what, how the series progressed throughout the years,
yet,
just started at this season?

10 years and 11 series(plus the celeb series) is a pretty good run. Of course it could go on and on. But I think the format had become stale.

Plus with CH4 now going all PC and inoffensive it really is time for them to let it go. I just dont think they can do it justice any more.

It needs a complete re-vamp by a fresh new production team bursting with exciting new ideas. And enthusiasm! You just get the feeling that CH4 and the BB prod team have lost the enthusiasm over the past few years.

The irony of it all is that viewing figures have gone up!. Big Brother has always been the main thing that has kept Channel 4 going (pretty much), them deciding not to stick with it could be a costly mistake from their point of view.

I still think Big Brother will be back, but on a different channel!, Channel 5 was muted as the station which could take it over.

However would BB be the same on Channel 5?, If it does move I hope Channel 5 don't mess around with it too much!

i feel kind of relieved, i watched this series because i'd watched the others. don't get me wrong i enjoyed it at times and got involved with the usual liking some hm's and hating others thing. I'm glad it's over though, it had got old, the process of hm's and agents had become standardised. It was of it's time. I saw TBB and even watched the show where they had to stay awake and got evicted if they fell asleep lol

Nah. For me BB11 was a chore to watch but out of loyalty to the show and the promise of "going out with a bang" I stuck with it. I think the show jumped the shark back in BB7 (maybe even 5) and was unable to find the magic again. Probably all they had to do was try to stop interfering with the story-lines too much.
A change of address and new management is a positive step to breath new life into the show. You should be thankful that it has ended tbh. Let's hope that in it's next incarnation it will once again be great. Fingers crossed.

Well I first watched BB7 as it happened in 2006, but not the whole thing just bits and bobs (mainly only Nikki clips because I was so entertained by her). Then just last August I decided to watch the full series, and then from there is when I really became a huge fan. I watched CBB4 next, then BB9, then CBB7 (live), then BB10, then CBB5, and then of course BB11. I would watch like 2 a day after school, everyday with my mom (she LOVES the show). It's weird because it's actually brought us closer and given us more time to spend with each other, it's like "our thing" to watch Big Brother UK together. Plus we share all the same opinions on housemates.

But yeah, even though I haven't seen every season in full, i've seen pretty much every BBUK clip on YouTube and have done extensive research on every series so I know quite alot.

My mom was crying during the finale lol....

Braden 11-09-2010 08:41 PM

Last night, I just hoped ALOT of housemates would of been at the final hour, but they wern't :(

That's my only criticism.

Captain.Remy 11-09-2010 08:48 PM

It was time for it to go, it had to happen and it ended well I think.

As a major worldwide BB fan, the UK version was the best of them all but it lost its flavour, its creativity, its genius and its soul. I feel less upset than when BB Australia got axed because it really had potential and wasn't used until the very end contrary to the UK version which had nothing major to offer anymore (BB11 is the proof)

Of course I'd have loved it to continue for years because it's been part of my life for so so so long but from an objective point of view, it had to be axed.

So yeah, looks like 2010 is the start of a new era for me, everything ends this year, it's creepy. And I still got French, Italian and US Big Brother + I will re-watch some series but not now, I need to give it a rest for a while. Maybe next year.
