Emile Heskey is our Franz Beckenbauer says Alex McLeish

* by Gregg Evans, Birmingham Mail
* Oct 13 2011

ALEX McLeish reckons Emile Heskey is turning into Villa’s trump card – and even likened the versatile star to Franz Beckenbauer.

The former England striker has been impressing his boss at centre-back in training, leading to the comparison with one of Germany’s most decorated footballers.

Because of the international break McLeish had time to experiment in training and decided to plunge Heskey into the thick of the defensive action.

Despite delving into the unknown, he was pleasantly surprised with the outcome and feels he could have a secret weapon on his hands.

“We now know what Emile can do, he can play in any position,’’ said McLeish.

“I could even play him at the back without any fears.

“We played him at centre-back last week and he was spraying the ball about the whole pitch as if I was watching Franz Beckenbauer.

“Emile is a brilliant, all-round player, he understands the game and we need him in the squad.

“It’s not just about 11 players.’’

Villa fans will remember former striker Dion Dublin adopting a similar role at centre-back and should the situation arise, McLeish could look in Heskey’s direction.

The 33-year-old may have lost his place in the starting line-up in recent weeks due to injury and the red-hot form of his striking rivals but he has not let his standards slip.

Gabby Agbonlahor has been a key contributor to Villa’s unbeaten start with four goals so far and a potentially lethal partnership with Darren Bent is building.

McLeish knows it would have been hard for the ex-Liverpool and Leicester striker watching Agbonlahor and Bent flourish up front, even if it was for the good of the team.

But his first-class attitude and enthusiasm to win his place back has gone down well with the management team.

Heskey is probably better than Beckbenbaur in the defensive midfieder role. Shame he's wasted nearly all his career playing as a striker.

Emile Heskey Appreciation Thread

Really there is not one already he is EASILY even more so than super Mario the funniest footballer to grace the game

Just from last night he had many amazing moments

There was the tieing of the shoe laces for 10 mins while the game was still going on

Till the brilliant shot that went for a throw in when he could have played Bent in PMSL

Now a video to celebrate his greatness
