First Impressions

How good are you at judging some ones character from first Impressions? Was chatting with my husband about this last weekend and I decided I'm actually a very bad judge of character on first Impressions. He's really good at it though annoyingly! People that I didn't like at all turned out to be really nice and vice versa!

MissKittyFantastico 30-09-2010 11:50 AM

Hmmmm I don't like judging on first impressions, because I've been wrong so many times about people! I do get feelings about people, like when something seems a bit 'off', and that usually turns out to be right but I'm really not all that great at it so I just go with the flow now and to hell with it.

Like your Gav, my Gaz is a fantastic judge of character, maybe it's a 'G' thing? :joker:

Niamh. 30-09-2010 11:54 AM

lmao, maybe so! I remember when I met my brothers g/f and I really liked her. My brother asked me what I thought of her and he really wanted to know cos he wasn't sure himself. Gav hated her, I wish I'd just ignored my own feelings and told him I didn't like her :/

Awww yeah I remember you saying about that before actually :( Yeah see a similar thing happened with me, we met an English couple when we were away in America last year, and met up with them when we got back home several times, the girl we both really liked and I liked the guy too and thought he was sound but Gaz was like 'nah there's something not right about him, reckon he's a bit of a dick' and turns out they've now split up because he'd been cheating on her for FOUR YEARS! I guess some people are just really good at hiding stuff and unless you're psychic (or your name begins with G ) you've just got to take people at face value.

Niamh. 30-09-2010 12:03 PM

yeah, I suppose so, I usually just keep quiet about some one I've just met these days cos I only have to eat my words otherwise!

Yeah that's the best way!

I think I'm fairly good at judging characters but sometimes I am wrong. I think we all have to be wrong about things sometimes and we would be 'freakish' if we were always right, but all things considered I'm quite good at guessing people. I think it also depends on the individual because different people pick up on different things in people, depending on what experiences they personally have. For instance, if you have personally been cheated on by someone, I think you are subconsciesly picking up on 'signals' given out by someone that perhaps they are a cheat. But if you had never been cheated on I dont think you would pick up on these 'clues' even if they were there. The same applies to other areas, not just cheating, depending on your personal experiences. I think sometimes though we can be looking for one thing and completely miss something else so not get it right. I dont think this is a consious thing so I think we dont even realise we do it most of the time. OMG this isn't making sense, I hope it does, kind of, I'm tired - sorry

I can probably tell if I like somone within about 12 seconds. First impressions are massive for me.

Smithy 30-09-2010 04:02 PM

I'm quite a good judge of character, I can usually tell what someones like within about 30 seconds of seeing them

Niall 30-09-2010 04:04 PM

I do judge people when I first see them but I try not to let that cloud the way I act towards them. But usually I can tell what that person is like within a minute at the most.

Stacey. 30-09-2010 04:06 PM

Can normally judge people well quickly. Sometimes it's wrong or whatever, yeah but I never forget what my first impression of them was, even if it does change in time. I hate when you see those sort of people that love attention, and so fake things to get it, and I know I won't ever properly like people like that.

Ammi 30-09-2010 04:21 PM

I think lots of people make judgements on first impressions and there are situations when they are the only ones that count for instance at a job interview when you only have a limited time to make an impression and if you get it wrong its too late cos there isn't time for the other person to take time to know you. But because people are so complicated and have many dimensions to their character sometimes your first impression can be bad but when you get to know them better you realise there's lots of good things that outweigh the negatives. So its good to keep an open mind and be open to changing your opinion and giving people a chance. I normally try and like people until they actually do something horrible or something I disagree strongly with. And I am so damn shy when I meet people for the first time, so I hope they dont make too harsh judgements on their first impressions of me

I wouldn't say my first impression of people always sticks. There's the guy who owns the building where I work for example, when I met him first I thought he came across as being really false but I know him years now and he actually is just a happy and lovely person. I always feel bad that I didn't like him at first.

What do want to judge people for? Treat everyone with equal suspicion.

People's appearance and attitude is something that you just do judge people on.

If someone's looks a mess and smells, do you really want anything to do with them? Also if someone's a right arrogant twat you can tell from first impressions, well it's just what you think. It's not really something you choose...

Jords 30-09-2010 04:43 PM

I hate first impressions, or judging people before you actually get-to-know-them or go on purely what other people say about them! Had that done with me several times and its annoying.

I am pretty good at judging character, however I dont hold my view on that person until I speak with them more.

Omen 30-09-2010 04:43 PM

There were 2 picture of 2 men in 2 cars, one a nice car, the other not. Women were asked to say who was more handsome. Invariably they picked the man in the nice car.

It was the same man.

lol just shows we judge on first impression whether we want to admit it or not its not a conscious thing, we just do

Yea I find it interesting cos if there's a reason why you have that impression like they're too vain, or they're grumpy or rude or whatever its easy to know that's the thing you dont like about them, but I find that sometimes someone seems fine but I just dont warm to them and even when I spend more time with them, they don't do anything wrong but I still cant warm to them. I wonder why that is

If they are Female it takes you 4 seconds to scan her body.

Yeah same! I get that sometimes. It's just how they are though like I can't explain.

4 seconds? A nano second out of the corner of my eye does.
