New Phone Scams???

I got a call to the landline yesterday evening asking to speak to Mrs [insert my surname]. This was already a little wierd as I'm not married, but I just answered that she was not around.

The bloke then said "It's in relation to your Sky Billing, can I just discuss it with you?". Double wierd as I discontinued with Sky over 2 years ago and have been with cable ever since.

I told the bloke to effing ram-it, but I'm wondering if his next line would have been akin to the spams we all get that they're having trouble with the monthly payments and could I reconfirm the credit/debit card info 'we'd' given them in order to avoid any interruption to service !!!

Just a reminder to folks to be as wary of cold-calls asking for personal/financial info as of the (sometimes hamfisted, sometimes convincing) spam emails we all receive.

I reckon it was a company trying to sell you insurance on your Sky box. I've had them before too. They make it sound like it is actually SKy on the other end of the phone, but really they are an independent company. :)

Sky boxes are cheap-as-chips tho Lee - why would anyone want to insure it? Sounds an equally hookey business!

Well.. I used to sell insurance on things like that, so obviously I can see the benefits :D

And Sky boxes aren't as cheap as chips are they?? Didn't used to be anyway!

How are you anyway?!

Ah yes I had one of these the other day about insurance on our Sky box (which we don't have) whoever was on the phone wanted all my bank details - hmm told him to shove it!!!!

:wavey:

Obviously you could see the benefits when working for Currys/Dixons! Big commish to mugs! As I understand it, Sky usually give the equipment free tp new customers but even a replacement box is £100 if your's fails - you wouldn't take special insurance on an iPod you'd bought out of Asda would you?!?!

I'm fine - sooty is enticing me back into the fold by playing the random picture thread

S'pose that's what I was getting at with my little reminder............I'm uber wary of spams asking for info, but phone calls from someone saying they are one of my service providers could have potentially caught me on the hop not thinking it through.

I know it took me a good while to catch on to what was going on - I had had a couple of glasses of wine as it was the evening it was only when he told me to go and get my bank card and give him the details that the warning bells started ringing - plus I was thinking what a bloody cheek telling me what to do!!!!

Good morning :)

I actually agreed to this insurance at some point (I'm a salespersons dream) it was £7 a month or summat.. cancelled the Direct debit as soon as it was set up. :D

HBB1508 07-10-2010 10:31 AM

Morning :)

I think I might have agreed to it had the chap not been so rude!!! Not a good salesman I guess.

Lee. 07-10-2010 10:38 AM

Yeah rude doesn't wash well with me.. although it is easier to be rude to them if they're rude to me!

I'm a nightmare if the saleperson is nice.. I had a Dutch bloke at my door one day telling me all about Oxfam. I told him to not to waste too much of his tim as I already donate to the charities that I want to and feel that that's enough. Before I knew it, he was in my house, drinking my tea, with me filling out a form for a direct debit!! I cancelled that one too..

He was sooooo nice though :D

Can I sell you iPod insurance then please Lee - it covers the earphones and cables too - £6 a month since you're a mate

Sky have a vested interest to make the hatdware below cost cos they then make pure profit on the subs..........also they're trying to rub-out Vermin Media.

I had to laugh at that!! Perhaps you need to tell your bank manager just to ignore any direct debits in the future - save you having to cancel them all

Haha.. that's not a bad idea!

I've had to start lying to prevent myself from getting into these situations.. I tell people who come to the door that I'm just the babysitter and people who phone that I'm the maid!

My OH used to be driven mad by me.. I kept having to cancel appointments for people coming round to measure up for new double glazing etc!

I'm not quite so bad nowadays though :D

I always feel sorry for people making cold calls, I had to do it for work before and it's a horrible job

I must say it's something I could never do - mainly as I hate using the telephone to start with!!!

It's a horrible, horrible job, and you have to remember these people are just trying to earn a living to and probably get loads of abuse everyday :/

Lee. 07-10-2010 11:34 AM

I think my softness is because I DO realise they're only doing their job!

But seriously.. A Hare Krishna had me shouting "Gouranga" in the High STreet once and I gave him some money! I CANNOT ignore people like some can.

I sometimes end up with 3 Big Issues all the same!!

Last time in Dumfi High Street there was guy on megaphone "Get Troops Out of Arghanistan Now, sign the petition". I went to table to sign to find that the box next to sig on petition had "donation" box too - mug, I felt obliged to put a £2 coin in. So we're not dissimilar!
