The sister of singer Mika is critically ill after falling from a fourth-floor window and being impaled on railings.

Paloma Penniman, 28, suffered multiple injuries in the fall in Gledhow Gardens, Kensington, south-west London.

Police said the incident, which happened in the early hours of Sunday, was not being treated as suspicious.

Ms Penniman is in the Royal London Hospital. A spokesman for Mika, 27, real name Michael Penniman Jr, said she was "critical but stable".

"Paloma had a serious accident," he said.

"The family have asked for privacy at this time."

The London Fire Brigade also attended and spent about an hour cutting Ms Penniman free before she was taken to hospital.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Police were called to an address at 0515 BST after reports a woman was impaled on railings after falling from a window.

"Inquiries into the circumstances have begun. It is being treated as non-suspicious."

Mika, born in Beirut but based in the UK, came to prominence in 2007 with his album Life in Cartoon Motion, which sold more than 5.6 million copies worldwide.

It helped Mika win a Brit Award and receive a Grammy Award nomination.

He released his second studio album The Boy Who Knew Too Much in 2009 and is currently on tour.
