Text Speech

Text Speech

Ive noticed that text speech/spelling has grown more popular in recent years, in general writing as well as on these types of forums. For me, this is a bad thing. Im not being a snob, its just that its hard to read and often incomprehensable, making no sense at all.

Some of it is completely pointless- is it really that hard to spell 'you' or 'are' instead of 'u' or 'r'?

Maybe I dont like it because I have never sent a text?

Im only 24, so Im not an old geezer moaning. I suppose Im not a fan or a user of it because mobliles were not as prevelent as they are now when I was at school.

Its having such a bad effect on youngsters spelling. Ive even heard of people using text speech in their English GCSE exams!
It seems to be getting worse, and I dread to think how children will be using it in 10 years time. Maybe the kids will grow out of it?

Does anyone else feel the same?

Yes! And it's because I am an old git! But, I don't care. I hate it. I hate illiterate people. There is no excuse for it.

*rant over*

Another 'old git' here!

I do send the occasional text message, but when I do I always use 'proper' words and have to put capital letters and full stops in! Doesn't look right otherwise. :spin2:

I don't like it being used on a forum, just find it pointless and lazy, you don't have limit on what you can write on a forum so why resort to it? It's pretty hard to make out at times too.

I use predictive text. And, I use the capital letters and full-stops. I text a lot, but never use 'txt spk'.

I definitely think age is a factor though. I was a teenager in the late 80s and mobile phones looked like this:

 Stropz. Im one of those where i NEVER use it on a forum as like Dan i think it is just lazy and pointless but I admit using it in text messages if I need to write a quick message and just slip in the u instead of you and r instead of are. But NEVER in essays and NEVER on a forum

BB-Rocks 18-03-2006 10:33 PM

Im guilty of it. I use all the time in texts, and i do use sometimes in the general chat area on this forum, not on the the actual bb bit

From the point of view of someone who's still at school, I too am often riled by the prevelance of "text speech". A fair amount of my friends often slip in the "u"'s and "txt bk"'s, I often succumb to the odd abreviation to avoid being labelled a "boff" which is seemingly otherwise inevitable. Yet I try to avoid this as much as possible, as I like people to think that I've actually got an ounce of sense!!

I stress the "THINK" part! :spin2:

Tom. :cat:

P.s. - Text speech on forums are a big no-no for me. :bored:

I text talk all the time when im sending a text and when im on MSN and stuff. Sometimes I even slip it in here by accident.

Legend 19-03-2006 07:05 PM

In texts & MSN i always use it. Mainly because i hate texting and not a big fan of MSN so don't like typing too much.

I only use 'u' i think on here. Maybe more.

sol 19-03-2006 07:21 PM

I use text language in texts and on msn but not on here - i would never ever use it in an exam though, only a dum-dum would do that

Pipergun 19-03-2006 07:33 PM

What on earth must go through their heads when they write in text speech in an exam!?

Precisely.............. nothing!!!

Nicola 19-03-2006 08:19 PM

I'm not big on text speak, even when I am texting on a mobile phone, and never really use text speak on forums or MSN as I prefer to talk in sentences.

Siouxsie 19-03-2006 10:03 PM

I am slow when it comes to to texting

Kore 22-03-2006 08:42 AM

Corkie 22-03-2006 05:46 PM

cc100 22-03-2006 08:11 PM

I sent an email to someone aged 30 who I thought was pretty intelligent.
The reply was appalling. It was full of text speech with no grammar or punctuation.

Shocking.

Legend 22-03-2006 10:00 PM

Shocking?

It is the 21st century!

EugeneSully 23-03-2006 01:20 PM

I can't even stand using text speech in text messages! I get loadsa free messages anyway so I don't care how loong my texts are. It's really annoyin' yes and i bloody well hate when people don't use full stops or commas, or question marks.. !! *yawn* I bet I sound like a snob too. Normal text is way easier to read and remember... if you hate chavs don't go overboard with text speech or you'll sound like un!
