Luck

Can somebody really have good luck or bad luck, and if you have a string of un/lucky events is it just pure coinsedence? :spin:

Also, would you say you were a lucky person, in general terms, or have any good luck 'charms'?

Kerry 29-10-2010 02:05 AM

Good question and good topic. Very tricky to answer mind!

I'm on the fence with this. I do believe you can make your own luck through being positive etc but there are obviously things you can't possibly control like ill health or death which you'd rightfully view as unlucky (to say the least)

I have illness, I was an orphan by the time I was ten years old and lost other family besides, I was beaten daily by an ex (I won't go on) yet still feel lucky for what I have now.

Sorry to get deep...

I'm not sure really.. but I do think that periods of good/bad luck teach us lessons; even if the lesson isn't immediately obvious at the time. I've been lucky enough to have enjoyed a blessed life so far, although I don't think I'm a particularly lucky person in the 'random chance' sense of the term.

Zippy 29-10-2010 02:06 AM

Everybody has good and bad luck. Its just coincidences really.

Some people make their own luck and some people just have a positive aura. But really its just a word to cover positive random outcomes.

MissKittyFantastico 29-10-2010 02:09 AM

It depends on your philosophy on life I think, some people believe that positive thinking can affect what happens to you, and I do believe that if you go about with a more optimistic outlook you'll live a longer and happier life in the long run. It's actually been scientifcally proven that optimists live longer than pessimists.

I went through a period of about 10 years of shocking 'luck', one bad event after another, but now I've had a run of really good things happen over the past couple of years. I honestly think that life is all swings and roundabouts, like a big wheel, you're gonna get your highs and lows but it all pretty much evens out in the end.

I have rotten luck.

Bless ya Kerry (I did type Jaye again before ), its really good that you overlook the bad things and focus on the good things life has offered you! Like your daughter whom you seem really proud of. :)

I agree with Zippy that its just a word to cover good/bad outcomes, and that you can make yourself lucky by either being positive, but also getting involved in loads of things and arranging stuff.

My nan called me her lucky charm the other day because she randomly rubbed my tummy and that night won £500 at bingo and was like its because I rubbed your tummy! :laugh2: Now she asks to rub it before she goes, not cool >_>

See I have gone through similar events, my father and two brothers passed away, my mum attempted suicide afterwards (luckily she survived), I've been in an abusive and violent relationship, was kicked out of home at the age of 15, had the whole homophobia thing, used to be obverweight so had that torment too which led to anorexia and so on...

But (there's a happy part to this :) ) I think I have been very lucky. I managed to get good grades in school, college and uni, I have a lot of amazing and supportive friends, I have been lucky enough to travel the world,I have a roof over my head, I love my life as it is and know that my future is going to be great, even there are a few more bumps along the way.

Heck there are a lot of people who have had/still have a lot worse lives than I ever will. So count myself very lucky indeed

(sorry about the essay) :)

LOL, no worries.

It's funny how you don't really know much about the people online you talk to, yet sometimes they are the easiest people in the world to talk to :)

EDIT: How rude I didn't even return the hug, sorry

My family seem to think they are lucky but everything I've read says the opposite

I feel lucky to have him but ask me again once he's awake and driving me up the bloody wall.....

What about good fortune? Happiness?

Shaun 29-10-2010 03:43 AM

Yes. Of course happiness does. However I'm too cynical and analytical for fortune/luck - it's sad to view the world so coldly but I believe everything is coincedence or consequence

I guess there could be a case made for 'making your own luck' - but then you're really just interpreting chances to have a more significant meaning than they probably do. It depends on your outlook on life I guess :p

Shaun 29-10-2010 03:43 AM

*needs to stop using the tongue smileys*

Kerry 29-10-2010 03:47 AM

:D

Yeah I know what you mean. Like I said in my first post I'm totally on the fence with this one as one day you can think "wow, how good is today" and the next you can get shat on from a great height.

Depends where your lifes at and your head really
