Couple give $10m lottery prize to charity

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-11699678

A Canadian couple who won $10.9m (£6.7m) in lottery winnings in July say they have given away $10.2m of the prize to groups in their community.

Allen and Violet Large said they were plain country folks who needed no more than "what we've got".

The two said they had donated about 98% of the cash after helping their family.

The elderly pair gave the money to churches, fire departments, cemeteries, the Red Cross and hospitals, where Ms Large has undergone cancer treatment.

"We haven't bought one thing. That's because there is nothing that we need," Mr Large, 75, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

Mr Large, a retired welder from Canada's Nova Scotia province, added that he and his wife were quite content with their 147-year-old home and everything else they already owned.

"You can't buy happiness," he said.

Fair play to them I guess, I dont think I could ever do the same. Begs the question why they even play the lottery in the first place if they dont need any money.

thats good - it winds me up when people win and say well I'll still be at work on Monday and its not going to change my life - this couple are changing other proples livesinstead who need the help - credit to them- not many of us would do it I bet. But yes I wonder why they did the lottery in the first place - perhaps this was the plan all along. Good to hear there are such giving people out there

Maybe because I think the £1 that you put on the lottery goes to charity if its unclaimed & a percentage eitherway? So yeah probably the plan all along :)!

It's a nice gesture but I still can't help but think 'what idiots'. Like you said, what's the point in playing if you're going to give the money away?

It just makes you think 'I could've won that if you hadn't played'.

Nope, as 'inconsiderate' it may sound if I won £100M on the lottery I'd not give any to charity [well, not a substantial amount anyway. Maybe £5K or something]. At the end of the day, it would be my money - and it would not be compulsary that I had to give some to charity, and thus I should not be lambasted if I didn't. The same applies to this couple.

No its not compulsary, its just nice that they did. Its not inconsiderate of you either because I dont think I would in fact I know that I wouldn't because I would have my own plans and my 'charities' would be my own family and friends. The article said they gave some away to their family so I'm presuming they were happy with that too, but say if it were my parents and they gave it away to charities and I needed the money I would no be happy. I still think its nice though because they obviously are happy in their lives without money
