TiBB Photography Competition 2010 ; Main Thread [Theme inside]

If you haven't followed a TiBB photography competition before the idea is pretty simple; every week you are given a theme and then you have to take a photo that shows your interpretation of the theme. Every week members will rate the photo's in order of preference, and the contestant with the least amount of points will leave the competition.

Same as every year;;
- You are not allowed to copy images off of the net, I WILL track the original source down of the image if I'm suspicious, and believe me don't go there.
- They must be taken by you, you are allowed to recieve advice from others but they themselves are not allowed to take the picture.
- Late entries will not be excepted.
- It can be a existing photo that you have taken, but preferably a newer one would be better.
- It has to be a still image.
- You can't show other people your picture before it is posted.

Rules On Editing;
You ARE allowed to;;
- Resize
- Crop
- Change the image to full B&W or Full SEPIA, not a mixture of the two or any other color.
- Change the contrast/brightness

You are NOT allowed to;;
- Use lighting effects.
- Blurring.
- Sharpen
- You can not use effects such as, Overlay, Lighten, Screen etc... on any picture.
- No text, or borders.
- No effects such as changing the exposure, selective colour etc..

Themes
Week 1: Misery

Lewis. 13-11-2010 06:57 PM

Welcome! As you can see, the contestant list is above! Well done to those who managed to get a place (everyone who applied)!

This year there will be just two judges: Myself and Vicky, and we will rate each photo out of 20, giving points to these 3 aspects of the photo:

- Originality 5 points available
- Sticking to the theme 5 points available
- Overall quality of the photo 10 points available

This will give you a final rating. This final rating will be put into a leaderboard. This leaderboard will be 25% of the final result! Votes from forum members will be the other 75%. The other forum members will have to put the photo's in rank order; the person with the lowest overall score being sent home.

The rules are the same as what they are every year and can be found in the opening post.

Themes will be posted in this thread. Contestants and forum members can chat in this thread about ideas, although please refrain from posting your photo on the forum.

Every Sunday evening there will be a 'photo exhibition' - which will contain the photo's from that week. The results will be later on in the evening.

Theme 1
Contestants, your first theme is Misery. You now have until the 21st of November by 6pm to send me your photo's. They must have a connection with the theme. The judges are looking for originality as one of their marking categories, so don't be too cliché; think outside of the box and get a good photo. Photo's must be sent in by PM please. So, get snapping!

Don't. :wink:

Why such a long gap in taking the picture though?

So we have to wait a week?

It doesn't take long to take a picture, even if you snap for hours you still only need 24 hours.

:(

Anyway...cool.

To be honest, mine is going to be amazing.

No joke. Can we not do it for tonight, though, I mean seriously?

How long does it take to take and post a picture?

Miss Ivy Balls 14-11-2010 03:47 AM

I'd better win this first round. I've just cut myself like a bitch to show misery and I'm not joking either.

I don't think I'm right in the head. :(

I'm not.

I hope my mum doesn't go mad.

I just got a bit carried away. :(

It will be OK. Just need to hide it from her.

Miss Ivy Balls 14-11-2010 04:35 AM

They're only paper cuts really. Don't worry.

Vicky. 14-11-2010 04:40 AM

Please dont do anything else like this, especially not for anything to do with here :/

Thank you Vicky. It really isn't that bad. I tried to find the tomato ketchup to start with, but I couldn't find it. :(

Lewis. 14-11-2010 08:14 AM

Yeah, Thomas. Please don't be doing anything like that. I'd rather you took a picture of you just frowning than that. To answer your question about why we need a week; some people lead quite busy lives (School, work, revision etc.) and probably have more important things to be getting on with. I for one could never take a photo in one night, as I simply get up, go to school, go to work, get home, do any coursework, leaving me an hour usually to do something. I can then do whatever I want on Saturday night after work or spend the whole day on Sunday doing something.

BOOSH 14-11-2010 11:45 AM

Can't we post them in here? Or post others we have taken but not the one we send you? It would be nice to have some photos in here too.

& I already have an idea for this :) But will have to wait untill tomorrow to take some snaps.

You can discuss ideas and stuff in here. You can post photo's too; as long you do not post the photo that you intend to use in the competition :hugesmile:

BOOSH 14-11-2010 11:48 AM

Lewis... I think that sharpness should NOT be allowed and enhancing the photo with brightness/contrast SHOULD

Unless you have your own studio it's pretty hard to control the light so sometimes a really good shot itself (the composition of it, the overall theme) can sometimes look rather dull, so a little enhancing can make it stand out
but with the sharpness, that's something you can control yourself by getting the focus or the depth of field right...

Lewis. 14-11-2010 12:00 PM

I thought that too BOOSH, but it seemed to work in previous years. I'm going to change them around as suggested. I think the main problem is that they are not contrasted too much, to the extent that they look fake. I'd hate for the competition to become a graphics competition, as many great photographers are not very good at computer graphics at all. Thanks for the suggestion and if I do think that the photo's are becoming more about graphics I'll change it back perhaps; we'll have to see :)
