There was one for everyone but it got lost somewhere...plus I want one for more attention for me :spin2:

I have a blog...the link's in my signature. And whilst it's for anything, about 80% of my posts are music reviews. So I wrote one for the new Black Eyed Peas album, and whilst it's not nearly as much of an effort on my part as my other reviews have been (this took me 10 minutes, tops) - that's kind of my point :p

I'm not going to give this the courtesy of a full review. Instead, I'm going to borrow from Will.I.Am's work ethic and just rehash a lot of criticisms. I have to say, I had bad expectations in this after 'The E.N.D.' which was just...3 good songs and then 45 minutes of what I can only liken to floating around, facedown, in a swimming pool full of urine.

But Christ Almighty. The Beginning makes The END look saintly. From the offset, with new single "The Time (Dirty Bit)", it's all repetitive, soulless, boring, generic electronic crap relying on a clumsy, embarrassing hook (Time of My Life, from Dirty Dancing) to try and sell records. There are brief rays of sunshine in "Somebody" and "Whenever", with alternative influences and vibrant sounds eventually being drowned out by this oil spill.

Words cannot express how much I loathe Will.I.Am. For the past 5 years he has literally just sapped off of what's hot and current - Cheryl Cole, David Guetta, Usher, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj to name but a few - in order to keep himself in the public eye. Just last night I read a story about him wanting to mentor current X Factor contender Cher Lloyd. If he hadn't punched Perez Hilton I'd have probably started a cult against his name.

Has he actually got no shame? And I'm sorry, this might appear that I'm neglecting the other 3 band members - but with Fergie being autotuned to oblivion in that she might as well be hired by AOL, and the other 2 not getting a mention, they're utterly irrelevant here.

You want to know what I think of the album?

There. That is the worst rating I've ever given an album.

You might think I'm coming off a bit strong - but seriously, take a look at the Black Eyed Peas' history. Songs like 'Where is the Love?', 'Pump It', 'Don't Lie'...they seem eons ago. Even 'Boom Boom Pow' is a step up from this diatribe of shite!

And it's just SO fitting that they decide to run with this conceptual theme of 'dirty bits' and digitally enhanced artwork. As if that's something to celebrate - the easiness and sheer condensed nature of this aesthetic; reducing what were once bright, exciting faces to mere pixels. Nothing about this venture is real. It's impersonal, replaceable cack.

Rating: Atrocious. Not even worth 1/10.
Avoid: all of it.

There. It took me 10 minutes to write that - and now I'll go and produce a Cheryl Cole album and praise something Barack Obama does.
I have slightly less harsh reviews on the blog  [sorry for advertising in a way...I just thought I'd get some feedback]

I agree with you; the Black Eyed Peas of old do not seem like the band we see nowadays; it's hard to believe that the likes of The Apl Song and Where Is The Love came from the same people who put out the likes of Rock That Body or that horrific new release of theirs. They've gone from being one of my favourite bands to a band whose music I now actively avoid; I had hopes that The E.N.D. was just a phase, and to be fair to them it sold well and was a smart move, but they've decided to stick with the same rubbish sound and I think, and hope, it will be their undoing. Good review! Post more :)

I counted Rock That Body as one of the three good ones from The END lmao - so if you think that's bad...

I like it for what it is actually, but when you compare it to the previous work of BEP it's appalling. I didn't bother to look at any of the album tracks on The E.N.D. so I dunno how bad it got beyond that haha.

an example of how bad it is now:

Good review are you just gonna do new albums or go back and do some retro ones too?

Shaun 24-11-2010 04:03 PM

Hmm. I've only done new ones on the blog, but I guess I could do older ones...

On the whole, the album is...disjointed. There's no recurring theme, the lyrics are tired and cliché, cold and impersonal. But where it shines, it shines bright - but my advice would be to wait for the Greatest Hits. As is with every pop album, it's a collection of potential singles and filler - and one can't help but suspect that too many cooks spoil the broth here. As is obvious, Rihanna's duetted and featured on more songs and albums this year than I can shake a stick at - and it does make you wonder if she's really focussed, or just having a good time. And given recent events, I think we can forgive her the latter.
...wow, I'm quoting myself. What a douche.

I am not looking because you were nasty about me in a blog before. :bored:

Shaun 04-12-2010 09:33 PM

...what?

Locke. 04-12-2010 09:40 PM

Strange. When I clicked the link he was on my TV performing at the soul train awards (Cee-Lo).

The Kanye review was good. Have only listened to Who Will Survive in America once though, and that was enough for me.

Where to place Jesus is difficult. She's very much in the critics' favour right now but I wonder if that's because every other female solo artist around has sold out in some sense. But I can't see mainstream success being the path for Zola Jesus - more than likely a critical hit. Of course, the indie-kids will be delighted with that (whilst...simultaneously complaining about her lack of success, no doubt). But what do I know?

I think I'm more critical of the scene she's catering to, than her herself however. Whilst there're plenty of thousands of moody indie kids with no real grasp on emotional turmoil, that shouldn't detract from Jesus' talents. And I'll leave you with that amusing religious image.
:spin2:
