More riots to come?

As the cuts dig deeper, do you think we will see more riots, strikes and protests against the Con Dems? Will we get something similar to the 'Winter of Discontent' strike wise? Will we see something similar to the poll tax protests of 1990?

arista 24-11-2010 01:10 PM

No

MissKittyFantastico 24-11-2010 01:17 PM

I don't think so, most people these days realise that it won't do any good anyway and people are too worried about losing their jobs to take strike action, the unions have no power.

Livia 24-11-2010 01:57 PM

Most people are too busy trying to earn a living. Only those with enough time on their hands to protest get to go along for the day and smash up other people's property.

I think that is a vast overstatement.

Z 24-11-2010 03:02 PM

I think so. Seems to me that a much more effective cost cutting measure would be to, I don't know, withdraw from the various armed conflicts we've engaged in and stop spending money on defense?

Or get tough re our illegal immigrant problem.. £200 million it has cost the NHS on treatment for people not entitled to it, plus £100 million spent on flights home for the illegals.. I can see a way to save a few pounds straight away!

Zee.. I think if you were PM, I could be your deputy and we could have this country sorted in a few months! :D

:D We'd sort them out in no time! I think the leaders of this country need to swallow their pride and admit they're wrong when it comes to the war(s) and immigration policies - seems to me like they're refusing to do so and therefore cutting money elsewhere because they don't want to back down from those policies!

What a stupid view. Clearly insinuating that the only people who attend protests are jobless crusties and half baked anarchists.

There's nothing wrong with protest. It can be an incredibly, incredibly positive force and has been countless times in the past.

But screw it. Let's all give up and roll over.

Christ, thats like a quote by quote of the Daily Mail. I think it is far to easy to generalise and blame all our problems on 'them immigrants'. So how would you 'save a few pounds' straight away? How would you stop 'illegals' coming over - which is SUCH a small minority. Immigration does alot of good aswell...

I've never read the Daily Mail in my life, in fact I no longer read newspapers. I do however have a family memeber who works for the Home Office in immigration so I know that it is a big problem and IS costing the country a LOT of money..

I'm not blaming all our problems on "them immigrants", not at all. I was merely coming up with one money saving idea in the same way Zee did.

And re stopping them coming over.. I need to have a meeting with PM Zee regarding that! :D

But that is just a tiny pebble in an ocean; it would help save money but the problem is regarded worse that it is; my sceptical self believes it's a ploy to detract from bigger problems.

And it's easy to say how we can save money but it's hard to work how to implement this; I could say I want to start mining millions of gallons of oil from Cornwall to sell, turn Essex into clothes sweat shops and cut and sell all Northerners hair to sell abroad as wigs to get a better economy - but I can't do this can I?

I agree it's a pebble in an ocean, but disagree that it is regarded a bigger problem than it actually is, in fact I think it is a bigger problem economically than we think! I did however use this just as one example where the gov could save a bob or two!

Join Zee and me, we'll make you chancellor and we can discuss your ideas.. (I'm kinda liking the idea of cutting Northerners hair!)

Start off executing criminals for Paedophilia, Rape, and Murder. Bring back the birch branding and the stocks for lesser crimes. Introduce compulsory Euthenasia for people over 70, and then after approximately a year introduce it for anyone out of employment for over 18 months.

Anyone unwilling to work go on a scheme to do minor tasks for the local community. Bring back the workhouse and soup kitchens in order to reduce the amount spent on benefits.

Reintroduce compulsory National Service but this time no exceptions at all. At 18 everyone has to report to an induction centre, this would allow even the poor to take a couple of years out and travel to exotic lands.

A free higher education system could be worked into this system with the workshy getting a couple of weeks training for some menial jobs and the more intelligent graded as to their ability.

Renationalise power, water communication and other utilities include the banking industry and pay a fair wage with minimal if any bonuses.

Just no.

I do agree with this. But I've no idea what a workhouse is, or how effective soup kitchens are.

Would object to this if I qualified for the age, but I don't, so meh.

Goodness no. That'd just even out the other suggestions you made - not to mention eliminate jobs + market economy. I'm quite divided on water, but power...no.

Tom 25-11-2010 07:22 PM

The student riots are pathetic, to think these people are hoping to be our future lawyers and doctors.

There probably will be more riots but I can't see the coalition lasting much longer. 6 months in and it seems to be strained already.

The workhouse was essentially forced labour back during the industrial revolution and prior to WWI, it was a brutal life for those forced to go there. If you judge it by the standard of the time they weren't all bad but they would be out of place in our 21st century society. Incidentally, the same could be said for a lot of Shasowns views

LOL is this some kind of joke! You obviously have no concept of the 21st century...

I can't suss you sometimes, Shasown. Are you being ironic? If not, this isn't your usual take on things. I always thought you were moderate.

Is that in general or just in this thread?

Just in this thread where I do now sense you were indeed being ironic?

Would be an interesting socio-economic experiment just think of all that profit piling back into the country instead of into the pockets of the leaders of industry, shareholders and greedy bankers. The harsher social measures would deter illegal immigrants and get something other than complaints from the workshy.

Profits from finance and industry could be reinvested for the future. Help to transform British industry into a world leader again. And put the Great back into Great Britain.

Captain.Remy 06-12-2010 06:54 PM

I don't think it will happen. It's not in the UK culture to do riots. They aren't French  We're used to it, it's common over there like "yeah another 4 days riot with no bus, train, plane, fuel, college, food but whatever"
