Incredibly poor spelling.

I'm in disbelief the amount of times I read FB entries, forum posts from people who can't spell very basic words, and don't know the difference between words that sound the same or very similar:

ie:- There, their, they're.
Of, off.
Using, 'Should of', instead of, 'Should have'.

A great deal of intelligent people who simply have no concept of the English language in it's most basic form written form. Don't get me wrong, we're all guilty of typing too fast, making little typos but I'm being specific to clearly not understanding the difference in words - which words to use when.

I had to laugh at one of my FB contacts, holds a very senior position in work. He posted and was slagging off the girls from Essex for their bimbo-like status, ripping them to shreds about their lack of intelligence.

In different posts, he used the words, 'They're / there / their', and not once did he use them correctly. Ironic to say the least, funnier though was watching his mates posting the same type of thing - ridiculing these Essex girl types for being thick when these idiots couldn't differentiate between a few simply words themselves.

It doesn't annoy me but I never fail to be astounded at how many people display such ignorance to their own language!:conf:

Using 'of' as a verb really annoys me. And when people say 'then' instead of 'than'. Not so much bad spelling, but bad grammar.

Tom4784 04-12-2010 02:21 PM

I'm weird like that, when I'm writing things my spelling and grammar tends to be quite good but I tend to become undone by a keyboard. I'm always noticing mistakes and editing my posts because there's always a lot of typos.

Yep, that's another one!

Spelling, grammar and context! The whole gambit.

It annoys me actually aswell..

The "then" and "than" is the worst, it obviously doesn't fit in comparing something saying "then"...

This, plus my keyboard on one half has a mind of its own, form the letters "q" to "y" they sometimes come up as different letters and sometimes not at all. Also my spacebar will randomly get stuck and i wont notice....

That's what I mean though. It's clear those who do this, and if there is something missing, 9/10 times it's due to simply nothing more than a typo. I certainly don't see it as being weird, it would be a very special individual who never made a typo or little error - especially when it's not of real 'importance' as such when we are all just thumping away on a keyboard.

I'm referring to those who are completely unaware or who simply do not know the difference. That's the angle I'm coming from.

I get that too. Often, it's less the keyboard to blame, but more me for spilling a drink on it or suchlike.

I wouldn't mind its the third keyboard I've had since January, the first one was wireless and it fell and broke, the second one got a pint of cider spilled on it and now this one just likes to randomly mess up all my words :(

I went through a spell (ha, no pun intended) of only buying the cheapo £5 keyboards from Asda, as I always ended up knocking some drink over them. Didn't see the point in buying expensive ones for me to keeping wrecking!

Not that I ever post when I am intoxicated. Never been known. Nope, never. *coughs*

The mistake I always fall foul of is the "less" or "fewer" one.

Spelled and spelt I have difficulty with- as I was taught both on American and British Curriculums. That messes the brain up a bit !!

I have an great excuse, English is not my mother language - In Deutsch dagegen könnte ich mich eloquent mit meinem Gegenüber unterhalten.

MTVN 04-12-2010 03:20 PM

People who think that "a lot" or "a bit" should be written as one word :bored:
