When does the afternoon become evening?

Obviously we know the morning becomes so at 12:00am

And afternoon occurs at 12:00pm

But when do you guys consider afternoon becomes the evening?

I ask this because so many people just make assumptions that as soon as it becomes dark its the evening. I was walking home yesterday at about 5ish and it was dark, cold and it certainly felt like the evening! definitely wasn't afternoon-like!

It's all very subjective as to what you personally believe, so what DO you personally believe?

5pm I think

I remember on the Big Bang Theory Sheldon was talking about this and he said there there's a special slot of time, which is neither afternoon or evening, which should be called "prevening" in between about 4-7

5pm, and probably around 6 in the summer months

I agree with 5pm - that feels like evening to me.

I always say that it is evening when it gets dark. It's been getting dark at around 5 recently but in summer not till 7/8ish... It all depends really!

Benjamin 07-12-2010 01:07 PM

I'd say about 5PM in the winter (it gets dark earlier in case you didn't know ;)) and in the summer around 6PM.

I always understood anything after 6pm was properly 'evening' until midnight where it is properly morning until 12 noon which is afternoon.

Now that you mention it... ..I don't recall seeing any actual proper guidelines, scholarly reference, council or legal decisions for that.

I suppose, on Saturday 'morning' at 1:04 am we are still up saying its 'Friday Evening' and 'Friday night'.
In Winter, I agree at 4:50 and its nearly pitch black and cold and you wouldn't say to someone 'good afternoon'.

There must be some official rulings on this. Where. Roget's?

About 5,afternoon is 12-5 and then evening and then night from like 9/10ish?

Jack_ 07-12-2010 03:43 PM

I've always imagined it to be when it gets dark, but I suppose the 'official' time would be around 6PM.

You could probably divide it up like this:

00:00 - 05:59 - NIGHT
06:00 - 11:59 - MORNING
12:00 - 17:59 - AFTERNOON
18:00 - 23:59 - EVENING

Stacey. 07-12-2010 03:46 PM

5pm - evening
12am - morning
12pm - afternoon
9pm - night

Boothy 07-12-2010 06:36 PM

6am-12pm - Morning
12pm-6pm - Afternoon
6pm-10pm - Evening
10pm-6am - Night.
