Charity wins as 40,000 run marathon

Huge crowds braved the rain to cheer on the 40,000 runners competing in the London Marathon.

Celebrities, world-class athletes, marathon veterans and complete beginners alike pounded the streets of the capital watched by an estimated 500,000 supporters.

Light rain and cool breezes made for ideal running conditions along the gruelling 26.2-mile race, which was won by Kenyan Felix Limo in a time of 2 hours 6 minutes and 39 seconds.

The runners raised millions of pounds for charity, among them five-time Olympic rowing champion Sir Steve Redgrave, who hopes to break the world record for a single marathon fundraiser of £1.25 million.

Sir Steve, 44, admitted his training had been inadequate, with his longest practice run just six miles, but still managed to finish in a time of 5 hours 29 minutes and 6 seconds.

Other fundraisers included Katie Austin, 25, and Gordon Fryer, 34, from Romsey, Hants, who ran the race in their wedding outfits and got married halfway around the course.

The first celebrity to finish was Olympic gold medal-winning rower James Cracknell, who completed the course in just over 3 hours - over an hour before his teammate Matthew Pinsent.

Cracknell said: "It was so inspiring to be here, I felt so lucky as when I got to the finish I could hear everyone calling my name. I'll see what my time was and I may come back next year."

The second celebrity across the finish line in the Mall was chef Gordon Ramsay, a London Marathon regular who has taken part six times before.

Other competitors included model Sophie Anderton, reality TV star Rebecca Loos and Big Brother's Jade Goody, who said she did only four practice sessions before the race because she "got bored" with training. A London Marathon spokeswoman said there was no record of Jade after she passed the 30km (18.5 mile) point at 4 hours and 37 minutes, and it was assumed she had not finished.

You just knew that Jade wouldnt finish. She only entered to garner further publicity for herself.

We'll now be subject to endless 'My marathon hell' stories.

My thoughts, also. What I want to know is why the papers continually indulge her with publicity.

Jade's Marathon collapse

By KERRY SHEEHAN and GORDON SMART

PANIC-STRICKEN Jade Goody wailed “I’m dying, I’m dying” as medics helped her into an ambulance after her dramatic London Marathon collapse.

The chubby fast food addict was carried from the course by race stewards after she passed out in the street.

Paramedics spent 50 minutes frantically trying to regulate her breathing before rushing her to hospital for emergency treatment.

A spokesman said the Big Brother dimwit — who told BBC1 presenter Sue Barker she had gorged on Chinese takeaways, curries and beer in her training diet — would be kept in for observation.

Jade, who also said she had done virtually no training, jogged just eight miles of the 26.2-mile course then spent FOUR HOURS walking another ten.

Spectator Richard Lankshear, 22, saw the mum of two after she keeled over on the Isle of Dogs.

He said: “Jade looked like she was turning blue as she was put in the ambulance.

“She could hardly get her breath and then got hysterical.

“She was clearly overheating and you could see lots of steam coming off her. She looked in a bad way and was obviously in a lot of pain. She was shouting to medics, ‘I’m dying, I’m dying’!”

As her ambulance arrived at East London’s Royal London Hospital with its lights flashing, Jade emerged sobbing — wrapped in a foil sheet for warmth. The 24-year-old star, who recently launched a fitness video, was running for the NSPCC set to raise about £500.

She had turned up at the start line 15 minutes late after dashing back from a holiday in Spain.

Jade began the race happily, but after jogging a few miles pulled over with leg pains. She then decided to walk the rest of the way — but “hit the wall” at the notorious Docklands stretch.

Before the race, celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay had poked fun at her booze and takeaways “training regime” quipping: “That means you’ll finish next Sunday.”

Fan Tim Harper, 33, of North London, said: “She was clearly in a lot of distress. She was crying and clutching her stomach.”

Jade’s collapse comes just one week after a hospital cancer scare. Her spokesman said she was given the all-clear.

She had earlier spent two days in hospital with a mystery illness. Last night relieved Jade returned home to Ongar, Essex.

She said: “I was just so exhausted I couldn’t carry on — but the doctors say I’m OK. I’m gutted I didn’t get my medal, but I’ve only got myself to blame as I did hardly any training.”

One expert said Jade should never have run the race.

Personal trainer Michael Noke, of Fitness First gyms, said: “For a marathon you start training three to five months before and do lots of cardio-vascular work. To run without training could seriously affect your health.”

Spectators told how Jade, wearing grey shorts and a Gucci bum-bag, slowed to a walk before collapsing five hours into the race.

Lisa Solwell said: "She looked like she was in serious pain. She staggered and fell against the side. She was crying and hyperventilating."

Mum-of-two Jade said from her home in Ongar, Essex: "I'm fine now. The medics checked me and said I was all right. If I do it again next year, I will train harder."

Well I hope Jade is okay, but honestly it was a bit daft trying to run a marathon after only a few practice sessions, and while wearing tennis shoes!

Take Her Away
24 Apr 2006

“I’M dying, I’m dying,” says the runner in the London Marathon, her yellowy brow caked in sweat. For the next 50 minutes paramedics try to regulate the athlete’s breathing. She is then taken to hospital for emergency treatment.
Jade talks to the pizza delivery girl
And it looks bad. Jade Goody, for it is she - who prepared for the marathon by taking onboard Chinese meals, curries and beer - is going a funny colour. “Jade looked like she was turning blue,” says an eyewitness. “She was clearly overheating and you could see lots of steam coming off her.”

Pictured in the Sun draped in a foil sheet like some kind of hot takeaway kebab, Jade is seen receiving treatment from a member of the St John’s Ambulance.

While we speculate on the odds of runner 42684 falling in love with her knight in an ill-fitting, blue cable knit jumper, marathon watcher and Jade Goody enthusiast Tim Harper sees Jade crying and clutching her stomach. Says Tim: “I’ve been coming to watch the marathon for years and I’ve never seen anyone in such a state.”

And that must be a result. Watching marathons is surely not too unlike watching a Formula 1 Grand Prix – the only interesting bits, breaks in the procession, are when someone hits the wall. Unless, of course, you have a fetish for vests.

Whatever the rights and wrongs of watching marathons live!, the Sun tells us that Jade is now fine. She’s now got enough puff inside her to speak. “I was just so exhausted - I couldn’t carry on - but the doctors say I’m OK,” says Jade from her Essex home. “I’m gutted I didn’t get my medal.”

Jade then says she has only herself to blame for doing just four proper training sessions in preparation for over 26 miles of slog, and flying back from a holiday in Spain the day before the race.

But she did not do all that badly. As the Mirror reports, Jade, who ran the race with a Gucci bum-bag tethered to her curry-steeped stomach, lasted 21 miles.

Encouraged by that, or just high on liquid oxygen, Jade tells the Mirror that next time she will train harder.

And fill her bum-bag with reinvigorating prawn crackers and a refreshing chicken madras...

UNPREPARED: Jade.

Jaded Goody Is A Baddie
Updated: 10:38, Monday April 24, 2006

Jade Goody has been condemned for her "suicidal" lack of training ahead of the London Marathon.

The former Big Brother star - who failed to complete the course - boasted how she only did four practice sessions as she got "bored" with training.
And she told how she had been "eating curry and Chinese, and drinking" in the build up to the gruelling 26.2-mile course.

Race director David Bedford said it was "almost at times suicidal" for people to start the race without proper preparation.

Jade's marathon anguish

Jade Goody collapsed during yesterday's London Marathon and was rushed to hospital after complaining of breathing problems.

The 24-year-old ex-Big Brother contestant had joked before the 26 mile race that her training regime had consisted of eating takeaways and drinking, with only one hour's worth of exercise.

And the lack of fitness showed, as Jade was forced to pull out of the race past the three-quarters mark at the Docklands stage of the run.

Speaking from her Essex home, a weary but recovered Jade said she was "gutted I didn't get my medal", but pledged to complete a full training programme if she ran next year.

More than 40,000 runners braved the capital's drizzle for the annual event, raising over £25 million in the process.
