What do you class as selling out?

All sorts of artists are accused of it. Think it's mostly rappers and rock bands. It's sort of hard to define really. One example I can think of is Eminem *hides from Eoin* D:

But I've noticed you've been posting his older stuff lately anyway

I don't like the phrase much, it's overused. I only really consider selling out to be if you change yourself completely in order to have mainstream appeal.

InOne 27-12-2010 02:56 PM

Don't actually think it's used as much these days. People ***** themselves all over anyway lol

LemonJam 27-12-2010 04:47 PM

If an artist or a group changes their style solely to fit in with the wants of the mainstream audience then I consider them a "sell out"

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 27-12-2010 04:48 PM

black eyed peas

Z 27-12-2010 05:52 PM

Black Eyed Peas and the Sugababes.

Changing your image, style and sound in order to jump on a bandwagon for more success.

MTVN 27-12-2010 05:58 PM

The phrase does get used a lot, people say Nickelback are sell outs and even though I do like their new stuff they have definitely changed their style

Surrendering your original sound or band composition to fit the requirements of a company's will (which is in turn shaped by public demand)

Two words

Bob Dylan

Seriously though I think it's when an artist who is clearly capable of better starts churning out a bunch of rubbish after a handful of good or even brilliant records at the beginning of their career. This is mostly to do with either fame going to the artist's head or an effort to appease mainstream simpletons. Although usually restricted to popular genres such as rock (Muse, Leonard Cohen, Radiohead) and hip hop (LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Q-Tip), one rare example of this in classical music would be Philip Glass.

sell out is really good
leona is changing her music a bit with her 3rd album her sound. But not much, as she has always had songs like forgive me and outta my head and scene of the crime

Metallica.
They're still good don't get me wrong, but they just don't make those masterpieces anymore, such as Fade to Black, or Master of Puppets, songs that everyone will remember.

Ramsay 02-01-2011 03:02 PM

^ doesnt mean they sold out just means they arent as good as they used to be
kings of leon and black eyed peas are prime examples they changed completely to fit in mainstream

lol 02-01-2011 03:17 PM

Well they just became dull and didn't have a unique sound anymore, to me it's selling out. :P

Niall 02-01-2011 03:29 PM

The B.E.P are so meh now. The E.N.D was a half decent album imo but The Beginning has killed it now :bored:

Ramsay 02-01-2011 03:31 PM

Fetch The Bolt Cutters 02-01-2011 03:42 PM

 I dont think he's sold out just he cant rap the way he used to, he doesnt know how. I mean if you listen now his voice has changed, his rapping style has changed, basically this is his second career now, the first one ended with Smack That. /rant

The only good songs were the singles, but then radio/tv raped them and they got overplayed and now I hate them as much as the **** songs :/

Smithy 02-01-2011 03:49 PM

Eoin, a line and a half is not a rant.
