Can you get addicted to tea?

I feel like this is a stupid question :joker: Probably is D:

But I swear I am I drink loads of it these days :bouncy:

Jords 15-01-2011 11:37 PM

I think it has a bit of caffine in it, so I guess.

MTVN 15-01-2011 11:38 PM

You can get addicted to caffeine, I think I probably am, so maybe but tea doesnt have that much in does it?

Josy 15-01-2011 11:38 PM

Im not sure, but I drink it constantly.

Jordan. 15-01-2011 11:39 PM

Yep, the caffeine.

Zippy 15-01-2011 11:39 PM

Coffee has lots more caffeine than tea. I think tea is more of a comforting habit than addiction.

Tea still has plenty of caffine in it. But not as much as coffee.

I like to drink normal tea in the morning and green tea in the evening! Green tea does not have caffine so it won't keep me awake!

I'm abit addicted to Coffee, It makes me sick alot now that I drink it that much but It feels weird when I don't drink Coffee.

The weird thing is, I find Tea nicer now? But still go for Coffee.

Shasown 16-01-2011 12:01 AM

Yes you can become addicted to tea, it doesnt have as much caffeine as coffee per serving and its absorption into the body is slower, so it doesnt give you the same hit.

However addiction to tea is no less real than addiction to coffee both in physical and psychological addiction terms.

Beastie 16-01-2011 12:06 AM

Tea keeps you awake for longer. Coffee wakes up up the first 10 minutes but then you feel really tired afterwards.

Kerry 16-01-2011 12:09 AM

Think so.

I like tea but it gives me tum ache :(

Stu 16-01-2011 12:09 AM

No. 'Yes' if you want to be pedantic but no. Not in real world terms. You wont 'crave' a hit of the aul tea in the addiction sense. You're not going to suck cock for a mug of tea. It's a comfort, as Zippy said. A comfort anyone would easily, easily get over if forced to.

I don't even think it qualifies as a 'mental' addiction.

Bollocks.

Coffee has alot more caffeine in it, Tea barley has any.

Caffeine keeps you awake.
That's why in Horror movies and stuff like A Nightmare On Elm Street, It'd be a shock if you didn't see at least 3 cast members drinking tons of coffee to keep them awake.

I mean you honestly wouldn't see one of Freddy Krueger's victims with a box of PG Tips beside their bed.

Caffeine keeps you awake, yeah, but a faster intake leads to a quick slump. Coffee necessitates the need to keep drinking coffee so no, it's not bollocks at all. Double that if you are having sugar in it - which is possibly the stupidest thing anyone could possibly do to keep oneself awake.

Are you really using A Nightmare On Elm Street as a citation point for the science behind caffeine?

Its not so much the beverage that people become addicted to, its caffeine, you would actually be surprised how much caffeine some people consume, without realising it, its present in tea, coffee, chocolate(both hot chocolate and the stuff in confectionary) energy drinks and quite a few other soft drinks.

Although the physical effects of withdrawal are a lot milder than withdrawal from certain addictive substances, they can and will occur if you remove caffeine intake totally from the diet.

Withdrawal symptoms including headache, irritability, an inability to concentrate, drowsiness, insomnia and pain in the stomach, upper body, and joints may appear within 12 to 24 hours after discontinuation of caffeine intake, peak at roughly 48 hours, and usually last from one to five days, representing the time required for the number of adenosine receptors in the brain to revert to "normal" levels, uninfluenced by caffeine consumption.

So what about really, really strong coffee?

If you drank alot of that, without sugar, would it fail to keep you awake aswell?
Yeah I was, But now I'm abit pissed I have and I'm actually starting to disbelieve everything I learnt from those films.

I'm going to question every scene the next time I watch it now.

It's simple really ... the stronger it is the biggest initial hit you will get ... then the greater the eventual comedown. You will feel more alert short term, yes, but long term you will feel far more tired unless you top up.

It's the same as virtually every other recreational drug.

Zippy 16-01-2011 12:25 AM

I doubt going cold turkey without tea would trigger uncontrollable sweating and panic attacks.

Probably not, I didnt list uncontrollable sweating or panic attacks in my last post.

Interesting to note the body can also absorb caffeine through the skin, some shampoo manufacturers now use it as an additive, as it is believed to reverse some of the causes of certain types of alopecia, as well as reduce the effect of testosterone in male pattern baldness.

So when you really crave a cup of tea or coffee, go wash your hair ;)
